    Abstract [en]

In this study, we examine the everyday experiences immigrant youths from two youth activities in the suburb have about racism. To do this, we focused on two main areas, first how everyday racism inherent in young people's lives, and secondly how they deal with their experiences of racism. To be able to examine their experience have we done a qualitative research approach used by semi-structured interviews on seven young immigrants from the suburb. Our meta-theoretical perspective has been social-constructionism, with post-colonialism as the main theoretical basis. According to this we use the concepts ''the Other'' and stereotyping, which are applied to the material. The material has been encoded, thematized, categorized and analyzed on the basis of the above theoretical perspectives.

Concluding remarks is that the racial story along with colonial values today characterize and affects the life of the young people living in the suburbs in a tangible way. This is mainly expressed through a perceived differentness and inequality between those who are racialized and those which are considered as the norm in society. That was depicted through two different forms, first through an experience of being categorized as '' the other '' and secondly by judged by stereotypes. These forms was actualized by the remains of the racial-doctrine, where the slave, and the animals were clearly visible, and also by a stereotyping by attributes like the beard, shawl, and the place suburb, which the result show that resulted in that young people is being regarded as eg suicide bombers, terrorists, and gangsters. Moreover, the results also show that the way to deal with racism was varied, but we have been able to categorize them in three main strategies: to try stay in safe areas, to stay away from racism in different ways (avoiding, removing, negotiating, adaptation), and to resist through group activities. Finally, we problemized and discusses how the immigrant youth experiences of racism directly or indirectly leads to social exclusion.

    Abstract [en]

The present study has the qualitative research with the output of systems theory aimed to identify the individual abuser path to addiction treatment. Three semi-structured interviews have been conducted and subsequently analyzed.

Addicts constitute a special category in the Social Services Act. In addition, it is to be found in the section of the law Chapter 3, 1 § (SFS 2001: 453) that the social outreach should make themselves familiar with the living conditions in the municipality. In addition, also provide information on social services in the municipality and through outreach activities and other means to promote conditions for good living conditions.

Results have demonstrated that it is primarily the abuser's family members who support them to contact applicants as current treatment. The study has also revealed that although the addict in the first place not turned to social services, but turned to other instances.

Respondents in the study all had individual agendas as applicable achieved abstinence. What, however, seemed significant among the participants has been a quest for better relationships with their family.

Another of the study's conclusions is that social services should expand its dissemination of information to local residents about drug treatment are available and how the aid is designed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study was to describe, compare and analyze how representatives from different professions in high school look upon their experiences of the schools work with helping students with mental health issues as well as preventing mental illness among the students. In our study we chose to use a qualitative approach by conducting interviews since we wanted to receive views from the representatives from different professions regarding the high schools work with mental illness. We interviewed six people who represented different professions in school and they worked at two different high schools. In the research we used it appears that collaboration and discretion were significant components regarding the schools work with mental illness. In our study we find that the Student Health Care have a central role in the work with mental illness among the students, but other professional groups seem to have an important role as well. The different professional groups collaborates in the work with mental illness and how collaboration function appears to affect the discretion of the professionals in their work.

    Abstract [sv]

Our study aims to problematize and examine how social workers perceive social service treatment of clients who identify them self as LGBTQ. We have chosen to analyze the social workers´ answers based on a norm-critical and social constructivist perspective. The study is based on five interviews with employees working in social services with different target groups. We have examined how they relate to LGBTQ issues arising at work. We also explored whether social workers acquired a LGBTQ perspective and norm-critical approach through their initial training and any further training through their employment. The social workers emphasize that it is very important to treat the clients without preconceptions. In summary the results shows that the five social workers do have a willingness to work with LGBTQ issues and norm critical theories. But these issues get lower priority due to time constraints. They also expressed a desire for more knowledge and training in LGBTQ issues as this is something that is missing. However the social services require tools, knowledge, time and resources to be able to meet their clients' needs

    Abstract [en]

It is a common problem among nursing assistants to work under difficult conditions in the nursing homes. They are exposed to stress which leads to an unhealthy workplace. According to several researches there is a high lack of patient safety in health care and this is a problem that is also found in nursing homes (Handler et al., 2006; SKL, 2011; Hughes & Lapane, 2006). The study's main purpose was to critically review the work environment deficiencies in nursing homes and how those affect patient safety. The questions used for the purpose of the study were: 1.Which are the failure causes of the work environment in nursing homes? 2. How do the workplace deficiencies in the nursing homes affect the patient safety? Six nursing assistants were interviewed in two different nursing homes. The study was conducted using a semi-structured interview guide, where the interview questions were divided into two main themes: work environment and patient safety. The material was collected from the interviews and processed by using thematic analysis. Four themes appeared: staff shortages, stress, lack of communication and written procedures. The results showed that staff shortages were the starting point for the other following factors, such as stress and lack of communication. Nursing assistants did not have the work procedure guidelines or safe work instructions. The conclusion was that the organization has a vital role in how the work environment and patient safety will develop in the future. To strengthen and create an effective health and social care the leadership is likely the key in improvement of structure and communication in the work environment of nursing assistants.

Ett nytt land: En kvalitativ studie om syriska emigranter i Sverige2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent times there has been a lot of debate on Syrian refugees who have immigrated to Sweden. The armed conflict in Syria is now in its fourth year. At least 120 000 people have died. The conflict has forced 9 million Syrians to flee and out of them 6.5 million are IDPs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration process of the Syrian immigrants, who have lived in Sweden for at least two years. We wanted to find out how they had experienced their first time in Sweden, how they perceive the support from the Swedish society and the factors that have had an impact on their wellbeing.

In this essay we have used a qualitative method. Data was collected through interviews which dealt with the integration process based on Syrian immigrants´ perspective. To our interviews, we used an interview guide and we picked out three women and two men between the age 20 to 45 years.

The theoretical basis was based on Bourdieu's habitus, Olkiewiczs (2008) assimilatory and nostalgic groups and Franzens (1997) constructive and destructive patterns.

Our results showed that the first time in Sweden was considered as a very difficult period for our informants. This was partly because of the fear of not being offered a Swedish residence permit, in turn this caused feelings of uncertainty in the refugee camps. They told us that the economy has not been a major problem, however, they were unhappy with that lack of consideration about their mental illness after the terrible experiences in their past. Some important aspects of feeling part of the community participant in the community were language skills, knowledge of Swedish culture and access to employment.

Through our results, we can draw the conclusions that social and political measures must be taken with regard to the integration process. The first thing you should do is to improve immigrants´ access to psychological treatment, since mental illness has had the biggest impact on their integration. At the same time we concluded that our informants need support from the community, in order to facilitate the conditions that they believe will improve their well-being. Successful integration should be built on the interaction between society and the immigrant, in order to be able to adapt to the society, and this is a fundamental condition for promoting the immigrants´ roles in society.

"Det sociala är ju goare än maten många gånger": En studie kring ytliga samtal och sociala gemenskaper för äldre.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to illustrate and analyze the occurrence and meaning of superficial conversation for senior citizens. The purpose was also to investigate what meaning superficial conversations can have regarding everyday life for the elderly and if it can contribute in creating social communities. Based on the objective of the study the following questions were formed: How can superficial conversations be described and what can be conveyed in these conversations? Of what importance is the place in creating superficial conversation? How can superficial conversation in conjunction with the place contribute to establishing social communities for the elderly? The study has a qualitative approach and the scientifically theoretical standpoint is critical realism. The empirical material has been gathered from a municipally driven diner. Seven participating observations has been conducted, where around four informal interviews have been conducted for every observation session. Furthermore four formal interviews were conducted; these have been qualitative interviews; a combination of semistructured and unstructured interviewing. Field notes were taken in conjunction to the observations and all formal interviews have been transcribed. The respondents are men in the ages 40-90 years old, living alone in private properties. The results of the study demonstrates that there are developed social relations at the restaurant which can be categorized as thin ties. The results also display how these social relations are expressed and the meaning of these thin ties in relation to the place. The results have been analyzed in relation to the studies theoretical framework and previous research. The conclusion is that the superficial conversation has a deeper meaning as a means for the elderly to create social communities. It also shows that the place is important, both in itself but also in conjunction with superficial conversation to help create these communities. The place is a contributing factor in the development of thin ties and superficial conversation nourishes this development and keeps these social relations alive. An increased understanding regarding the importance of superficial conversation would facilitate the social pedagogical work for finding new ways of preventing social exclusion and in the development of social meeting places for elderly people.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine elderly´s, residents of nursing homes, feeling and experience of their own Quality of Life by examining their sense of well-being, satisfaction and happiness. The questions for this study was "What promotes and prevents the feeling and the experience of Quality of Life in elderly", "In what context and with whom perceive elderly high Quality of Life" and "How has the feeling and perception of Quality of Life changed after they moved to a nursing home". The choice of terms, well-being, satisfaction and happiness, has been made from Bengt Brüldes mixed Quality of Life theory. The Study is thus based on Brüldes theory ant thoughts about life and how Quality of Life can be examined.

The study has a qualitative approach, in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with six elderly living in nursing homes in a small community. The analysis was done according to DePoy and Gitlins four thought and action processes of qualitative analysis. An inductive approach was used where categories, taxonomies and themes were picked up. The categories that emerged were primarily health, meaningful relationships and social interaction with others. Other categories that emerged were help/support, security/unsecurity, economy and humility.

The study shows similar results to previous research projects nationally and internationally. The similarities that emerged is that good health is a contributing factor to an increased feeling and perception of Quality of Life, but also the importance of close and good relationships with family and friends. Furthermore, informants raised the importance of good living conditions so as economy. Nevertheless informants lift the importance of extracurricular activities but also past experience of life. What emerged as the most interesting in the analysis is our interpretation of the elderly as humble, which can affect their sense and experience of their own Quality of Life if their humbleness affect their ability to ask for help and support.

Due to the findings of the study we are of the meaning that its of importance in social work with elderly to maintain and promote the feeling and perception of Quality of Life among elderly living in nursing homes. This is based on the analysis where our interpretation suggests that elderly's humility may affect their feeling and experience of individual Quality of Life negatively.

Managing boundaries at the accident scene: a qualitative study of collaboration exercises2014In: International Journal of Emergency Services, ISSN 2047-0894, E-ISSN 2047-0908, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 77-94Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify what is practiced during collaboration exercises and possible facilitators for inter-organisational collaboration.

Design/methodology/approach Interviews with 23 participants from four exercises in Sweden were carried out during autumn 2011. Interview data were subjected to qualitative content analysis.

Findings Findings indicate that the exercises tend to focus on intra-organisational routines and skills, rather than developing collaboration capacities. What the participants practiced depended on roles and order of arrival at the exercise. Exercises contributed to practicing leadership roles, which was considered essential since crises are unpredictable and require inter-organisational decision-making.

Originality/value The results of this study indicate that the ability to identify boundary objects, such as injured/patients, was found to be important in order for collaboration to occur. Furthermore, lessons learned from exercises could benefit from inter-organisational evaluation. By introducing and reinforcing certain elements and distinct aims of the exercise, the proactive function of collaboration exercises can be clarified.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to explore how mediation activities in Sweden is made by a Swedish authority. It's about how the participants mention mediation, and how the need for changes that are around mediation as a tool in crime prevention works. My two questions is about how actors view mediation and what it takes for mediation to work between all levels within the various authorities. Through the work I have used the concept of restorative justice and demonstrated how it differs from the retributive justice. Restorative justice is about how to repair an injury, which is one of mediation purposes and where the perpetrator and victim are given the opportunity to meet in mediation. The retributive justice involves the offender and the victim meeting in the courtroom.

I have used the Social Board report "

Mediation in crime for young offenders". It is about how local government works with mediation, but is also an analysis of the need to support mediation activities. The report highlights the problem areas and the way to success.

The method I used is Michel Foucault's discourse analysis. The result of the analysis is about the discourses I find in the report .What I would like to show is that mediation is portrayed as both an opportunity and a problem. I find a comprehensive need of discourse, a discourse of knowledge and an administrative discourse .Then I also present an economic discourse that is not as clear as the other discoursers, and obligations and rights within discourses.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe and seek understanding of how relatives to children with neuropsychiatric disabilities experience the treatment from professionals in social services. The focus is on the knowledge and relational aspects that can be said to form the basis of professionals' treatment expertise. To illustrate these questions about treatment can inspire discussions that there should be a deeper ethical awareness among the professionals. That awareness provides a richer understanding of the relatives’ situation and an insight into what good treatment is all about, which also seeks more and more in today's welfare society. The issues which the study is based on are: How do the relatives describe the concept of treatment? How important are the professionals knowledge in the field neuropsychiatric disorders, for the relatives experience of treatment? How important are the professionals ability to create a relationship, for the relatives experience of treatment? The method used in the study has a qualitative approach and is based on focus group interviews. The selected theoretical key concept was symbolic interactionism, which together with the concept of treatment and explains and analyzes the treatments significance of the interaction between the individual and professional. The result is presented, analyzed and reflected upon using the study's theoretical key concepts and previous research. The result of the study demonstrates that the informants experience the treatment from the professional as inadequate, as it does not match the informants’ descriptions of the concept of treatment. The result also shows that the informants experience that the professionals do not have direct knowledge of neuropsychiatric disorders. The result illustrates that all informants experience that they are not being listened to and that the informants feel powerless. The result shows that the informants experience that the premise of being able to create a relationship with the professional has not been shown, that is because as the informants denounce that they had to change social workers on several occasions. The conclusion is that professionals’ knowledge in the field of neuropsychiatric disabilities and professionals ability to create a relationship is very important for the relatives’ experience of treatment

    Abstract [en]

The background to our research is a common interest in adolescent identity development. We have found no previous studies of how home solutions can contribute to a positive identity development so we considered it interesting to do such a study. The purpose of the research is based on a staff point of view to increase understanding of the meaning to the work with home solutions when it comes to taking advantage of and strengthen young people's positive identity processes. In order to answer this purpose, we have chosen to problematize questions about how identity formation takes place in their activities and how they with home solutions can strengthen these young people in a positive direction.

We have used a social constructionist point of view throughout this research. To collect our material we have done six individual qualitative interviews that have been analyzed and processed using a qualitative content analysis. Our results shows that the staff group describes identity as socially constructed with and by the individuals context. They also describe that home solutions can contribute to a stronger identity development through their work, their view of man and ways of being. Our interpretation and conclusion is that the staff considers their work with home solutions contributes to influence young people's identity development in a positive direction. Since our study has a staff point of view it would be interesting to do further research on a youth perspective.

Thee purpose of this study was to examine what helps in counseling against women victims of domestic violence, and how to identify empowerment in their experiences? It is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews where the collected material is based on five interviews. The group we studied is victims of domestic violence who had taken part of counseling. The interviews were based on an interview guide that sought answers to women´s experience of counseling. The interviews were analyzed with the help of theories of support, domestic violence and empowerment. The analytic method used is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which means that the text develop categories and themes. The themes in the analysis became” the profession´s impact on women´s experience of counseling, the importance of relationship to the experience of counseling and the significance of the support for the women´s process of empowerment. The result shows that security, trust and distinctness are essential to a good relationship between the women and the social worker. For this to be possible, we see that the required skills, knowledge and experience of working with domestic violence and the consequences it brings. A good relationship can in turn give confirmation and insight and thus give rise to women´s process of empowerment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate if the naturally occurring substance Ibogaine could be a good treatment for substance abuse. In order to answer this question, qualitative interviews have been performed with five persons who have been subject to Ibogain treatment and one psychologist/psychotherapist at an addiction treatment clinic, Lars Lundell.

In addition to these interviews an Ibogaine treatment clinic located in London has been visited. At the clinic an observational study of the treatment was carried out as well as interviews with the responsible physician Dr Brackenridge one of his patients, named Will in this paper. The perspective of this study is substance abuse treatment with Ibogaine based on the informants experiences and our own observations.

The interviews have been formed based on the following three questions:

    1. How is a treatment carried out?

    2. How have their lives been affected by the Ibogain treatment?

    3. What are the informant’s views on Ibogain treatment?

The analysis was made looking for similarities and dissimilarities in the informants answers, divided into the three previously described questions. This information was subsequently interpreted using literature, observations and our own thoughts.

The study shows that among the informants there is an almost unanimous opinion that without the Ibogaine treatment they would not be alive today.

The study clearly shows that the informants feel that they have a much better quality of life after the treatment. The conclusion of this study is that Ibogaine can be a successful treatment for substance abuse.

    Abstract [en]

1,3 million people in the Swedish society are estimated to be a relative to someone with achemical dependency. Consistent research has repeatedly found evidence that living in these circumstances can precede devastating consequences and that support may be required for the relatives to improve their situation. Even though the situation of relatives is world wide neglected and the support that's given is inadequate in many cases. The purpose with this study was to, on the basis of relatives' experiences; analyze the need for support of the adult relatives to persons with chemical dependency and relate this to what kind of support the community offers. Using semi-structured qualitative interviews, we took part of four family members' stories about how it mightbe like to live besides someone with a chemical dependency and what support they considered necessary to manage their situation. The theoretical starting point was based on the Coping theory with the related concepts of constructive/destructive coping and the concept of social support. These were used to analyze possible underlying causes of need for support and what both professional and informal support may mean. Our result showed that the relatives, because of the family member's dependency had embraced destructive behaviours and that several forms of support had been significant for them in the process to change their situation. We also found that the relatives needed the society to pay attention to them as a group. They had experienced that several professional help-organizations were in the lack of enough knowledge to help the mand felt that the range of support were insufficient. We think that a greater knowledge about what the situation can implicate for the relatives of chemical dependent persons needs to be lifted in every service area and that resources need to be added on developing more support facilities.

    Abstract [en]

The centre of Child and Youth Studies at University West works strategically with other regional research environments and institutions that study children, youths and young adults. The goal of our research centre is to spread knowledge about the social conditions under which children and young people live, thereby strengthening their position in society. Collaboration with external research environments is one of the ways that our research domain works to reach that goal. Partnerships are formed through a model that strives to create good conditions for both our research and that of our partners. This model is grounded in a dialogue between research partners who work together to select areas of interest and formulate hypotheses. These research projects are financed equally by the university and our partners. The following report is the result of one of  these research partnerships.Advanced industrial society has been replaced by a society based upon knowledge and information where industrial work/manufacturing becomes less common. Västervik is one of the small towns in Sweden whose main industries have closed down or severely decreased their workforce during the last few decades of great structural change. The groups in the job market that have been most affected by these changes are young men and women, something which is evident in the high unemployment rates among the young population. The purpose of this study was to investigate young people’s own experiences and thoughts regarding their own situation as jobseekers in the municipality of Västervik. How do they see themselves and the situation they find themselves in? The narratives were collected in the form of 18 in-depth interviews with young men and women between the ages of 19-25, all them registered at the job center in Västervik. In the report different aspects of their situation are discussed, such as: the young people’s relation to their hometown, their thoughts on the meaning and value of work, the role of education, the economic, social and emotional consequences of unemployment, and their experiences of taking part in various programs for unemployed. The narratives we have encountered can be seen as having some general validity in the sense that many of their experiences are probably shared by other unemployed young people in other locations in Sweden, but Västervik is also a specific town with a specific history and specific conditions. The young men and women have an ambivalent relationship to their hometown. On the one hand they want to start a life in the same location, but on the other, the future there is seen as very uncertain. Many of those interviewed would like to have the kind of industrial jobs that their parents have and grandparents experienced, but which are nowadays less and less common. The norm of a fulltime job is strong among the young men and women – something which strengthens the image of the evident dissonance between their seemingly traditional dreams and intentions and the structures of possibilities the municipality and community suggest for them. Connected to this are the ways the young people must relate to the postindustrial demands of employability – which means the ability to enterprise and market oneself on a competitive market. These demands presuppose abilities that are more likely to be socialized and practiced in certain social environments rather than in others, and the majority of the young men and women interviewed have a background in aworking class environment where these values and approaches are far from selfevident. The socioeconomic marginalization that these young people experienceresults in much curtailed possibilities for a period of youthful experimentation aswell as for an expected adulthood. Being unemployed means one has difficulty ingaining the status of an adult, but due to economic shortages, there are also limits to how much they can take part in this experimental lifestyle that characterizes youth. The young men and women’s situation can thereby be seen as a grey zone; they are neither young nor adults in the normative sense. In some of the narratives the young people express critical thoughts with regard to the social conditions that their difficult situation can be related to. By extension, expressing these thoughts and stating their opinion can be strengthening and mobilizing for them, both as individuals and as a group. Insights may be gained about unemployment as a shared experience rather than as a personal failure

Young and working-class without work2016In: Nordic Youth Research Symposium: Youth Moves – Voices – Spaces – Subjectivities, Trollhättan: Högskolan Väst , 2016, p. 41-41Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses narratives from young unemployed working class men and women, living in a small Swedish town located outside the emerging economic regions. Like in many other European countries the rate of unemployment among youth is disproportionally high in Sweden. The empirical work the study is based on consists of a sample of in-depth interviews with men and women in the ages of 19-24, conducted during 2014. The main research question of the study is about how young unemployed people experience and reflect upon their own situation. Industrial societies have turned post-industrialand this is reflected in the social structure of the communities that for decades used to be dominated by industries and smaller factories. The labor market has undergone major structural changes during the last four decades. Since the cultural and social identity of the working class traditionally has been closely connected to an intergenerational continuity where foundational elements are defined by work and a belonging to the local community, the situation of unemployment means that the identities as well as the community are forced to be reimagined. The narratives from the young men and women in our study can be seen to reflect social and cultural changes that have taken place on a structural level concerning the labor market, the education system and alsothe changed conditions for the formation of social identities. We make use of Margaret Archers concepts contextual discontinuity and contextual incongruity in understanding and discussing these tendencies.

Young working class men without work: re-imagining masculinity in post-industrial societies2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses narratives from young working class men, living in a small Swedish town located outside the emerging economic regions. Like in many other European countries the rate of unemployment among youth is disproportionally high in Sweden. From a broad material of in-depth interviews with unemployed young people the issue of masculinity in relation to work is an emerging, though not always specified or articulated, theme. Industrial societies has turned post-industrial. The labor market has undergone major structural changes during the last four decades and since working class masculinity traditionally has been closely connected to wage labor and to the ability to provide for oneself as well as for others - being the main breadwinner of the family - masculinity is forced to be re-imagined. In the ongoing construction of identity and young masculinity, nostalgic images of a recently lost way of life where employment meant hard labor but also a durable and respected position in the community, are retold. Parallel to these narratives and sometimes in opposition to them, there are also wishes and dreams of alternative ways of relating one's own role, identity and masculinity to a different set of work ethics where neither wage labor nor traditional masculinity need to form it´s stable categories.

Adolescents' self-defining internet experiences2015In: Technology and youth: growing up in a digital world / [ed] Kinney, David A., Bass, Loretta, Blair, Sampson Lee, Neff Claster, Patricia, Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2015, p. 105-131Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AbstractPurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate how young women and men perceive the Internet as a phenomenon and what role and meaning they ascribe to the Internet as an arena for defining themselves and for shaping their identity.Methodology/approachThe empirical data consist of narratives written by Swedish adolescents. Using content analysis the analysis was carried out in three steps: (1) finding categories and themes, (2) calculation of statistical differences in category frequencies, (3) a theoretically informed interpretation of central themes, using Bourdieu's concept of different forms of capital, and Giddens' concept of "pure relations."FindingsThe narratives exemplify how computer literacy and technological competence can be converted into social, cultural, and symbolic capital. Gender differences occur both in statistical differences between category frequencies in girls' and boys' narratives and in the interpretation of central themes. But there are also several examples that show more complex and contradictory tendencies, exceeding or transformative of gender differences and hierarchy.Originality/valueThis study considers adolescents' own perspectives on an arena of great importance. The analyses have been performed both qualitatively and quantitatively, which gives a nuanced picture of young people's self-defining experiences on the Internet.

Work Integrated Learning from the Perspective of Internationalization2012In: The European Conference on Educational Research 2012: The Need for Educational Research to Champion Freedom, Education and Development for All, 2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this presentation is on work integrated learning in higher education that takes place in a cultural context different to that which the student is accustomed to. In higher education internationalization is often stated as a central vision both in relation to education and research. This is commonly expressed in policy documents in statements such as working for an open and border crossing university and having a distinct international perspective in all forms of higher education. The research project “Work integrated learning from the perspective of internationalization” is designed to highlight some of the conditions that surround such visions by examining learning in international settings from students' experiences of practice-related activities abroad. This involves activities that are directly work-oriented or field work carried out within the framework of a university course and / or a bachelor thesis. In the project we are thereby examining students' situated learning and thus highlight the contextual practice community they can access in an international environment. This includes both specific and more general aspects of learning in which different aspects are highlighted. Specific training related to special education programs focus on the development of professional identity while generally learning affects students from all programs in which learning outcomes such as wider perspectives and critical thinking are included. Our research focus is of exploratory nature where the approach is to examine students’ experiences of practice-related learning from the perspective of internationalization. This is being researched from three relating aspects. • Emotional and identity transformational aspects of learning. What does it mean to be in a relatively unknown social environment and there be faced with work-related tasks? What kind of interpretations and understandings of the situations occur? • Communicative aspects of students' practice-oriented learning – the importance of language and cultural codes. • Comparative aspects of students’ learning – the importance of comparisons for perspective taking and development of knowledge.Previous researched has been done on students’ practice-related learning in the field of work integrated learning. The forms of practice-oriented learning are of various kinds. It may be learning through the use of practical training related to establishing a profession-specific knowledge and identity. Other forms are the use of direct working connections or cultural settings outside the university through project work in course moments and / or for a bachelor thesis. What is common to these various forms is an endeavor of higher education to make the arena and cultural settings outside the university to a direct part in students’ learning. Given that the internationalization of higher education has increased, it is important also to examine students’ learning in various international contexts. The relevance of this can be found in theories of learning particularly those focusing on the contextual meaning from the idea that learning originates from the experience of interaction with the environment. Social aspects such as the relational and dialogic qualities are central already in the work of Vygotsky (1962) but according to Cooper (2008), it is only recently that this has been researched from an international perspective.

    Method

The study is based on qualitative interviews with post graduate students who have completed internship or field work abroad. We have conducted in depth interviews using a guide with thematic questions focusing on emotional, communicative and comparative aspects of work integrated learning abroad. When processing the raw information the interviews were digitally-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The sample includes 12 in depth interviews, three students from each four different departments (social work, teacher, health promoter, cultural studies and engineering) at a smaller Swedish university. Another category of material is the interviewed student’s written reports from their field work. A content-analysis is performed on all parts of the material according to the three mentioned aspects. The analysis is abductive, which means that it uses theoretical concepts in making sense of the material, but is also sensitive to the participants' own ways of conceptualizing their experiences and learning. Common as well as unique features in the students' stories will be presented and discussed and considered in regard to the students' personal, institutional and cultural contexts.

    Expected Outcomes

Preliminary analysis suggest in line with previous studies that the interviewed students' experiences of practice-related learning in a different cultural context show linkage with the phenomenon of sojourning which means taking up temporary residence in another culture. The previous, more linear psychological explanatory model of "adapting" the self in a new country to study or work does not suffice to explain the students' various experiences and learning in their field of study/professional development or on a more general. Our primary analysis of the material rather indicate that these processes are best understood as a complex web of shifting links between mastery of communication, social interaction and personal development. It is the management of this web which gives the result of cross-cultural adaptation and renegotiation of the "identity". As previous studies in the field have shown, personal, educational and psychological factors are as important as organizational and social-cultural factors for influencing the learning outcome (Qing et al 2010). And when it comes to identity formation practice related learning abroad also shows deeply personal transformative possibilities (Ryanand & Viete 2009).

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to try to identify what young women see as typically female and how this affects them as individuals, focusing on the female body. How free or limited do they consider themselves to respond to prevailing ideals of beauty, to men and other women. Our questions are how young women construct femininity through the body and why? We do this by using a holistic gender perspective and with the help of key theoretical concepts; gender, normative femininity, heteronormativity, performance, freedom/power and the female body,. We have had a qualitative approach and we have done interviews with six girls in secondary school age. The material is processed and analyzed on the basis of the IPA model, which aims to build themes from the interviews. The themes we have stressed in the study are: Female with large F, To find balance, I want to be unique... (but in the right way), Get a good boyfriend and learn to socialize with girls, To be something for everyone and desire after impossibility and the road ahead. By letting our informant´s voices be made visible in our analysis, we have been able to answer the question of how they experience their own construction of femininity. What becomes visible in the analysis is the great knowledge and awareness which are among the girls on this subject. This shows the complexity that exists around young women today. More conclusions that can be drawn is that whichever way the woman construct her femininity gives different degrees of social status. Lack of freedom is not about the limited possibilities for action it is rather the impact the effectiveness of the choices made and the awareness of those who provide the experience of not being free.

A qualitative study of the experience of correctional treatment specialists working with incarcerated women and their accompanying children

As children living with their incarcerated parent in correctional treatment, is in Sweden a relatively undiscovered area, we wanted to examine the experience of correctional treatment specialists working with these mothers and children.

The purpose of the study was to analyse and discuss the experience of correctional treatment specialists working with incarcerated mothers and their children. The purpose was also to examine and discuss how the specialists at the institution characterise their potential resources to treat and support these mothers and children.

This qualitative study was conducted by collecting experience through interviews. We conducted nine semi-structured interviews with correctional treatment specialists at an institution in southern Sweden during one week. We deploy the methodology of critical hermeneutics to examine the collected data and theoretically we subscribe to the attachment theory and the principles of social pedagogy.

Our major discovery is a lack of resources among correctional treatment specialists in relation to incarcerated mothers and their children. Some are concerned that the older children are under stimulated and lose the social interaction and stimulation of the outside world. Even though these concerns are not fully applied to infants, having children at the institution is in all cases motivated by the attachment theory. According to the correctional treatment specialists having children with their incarcerated mothers is better than the alternative separation between the mothers and their children.

We also found that the question of having children at the institution or not, might not have been an issue if mother and child were perceived as a unit. The result clearly shows that the individual needs of the children and their mothers respectively, are not considered separately and therefore not provided for. Consequently the mothers are prevented from participating in treatment and education, reducing their penalty to preventive detention or simply "doing time". Meanwhile the older children are at risk of being under stimulated and losing out on social interaction with other children, and stimulation adapted to their needs. For infants the issue does not seem to be as great.

The result also shows a lack of resources for treating and supporting mothers and children at the institution. There is a requirement among the correctional treatment specialists for a resource specialised in children and families, which would have resolved many of the issues the specialists are currently expected to manage in relation to the mothers and their children.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how women who have lived with a partner with substance abuse problems described their situation. The study had a qualitative approach and the method used in the study was semi-structured interviews where five women participated.

The analytical method used was content analyzes and the interviews were analyzed by relevant research and the social psychological perspective. Our results demonstrate that those developing a co-dependency have some form of dysfunction in the primary family. This is consistent with previous research in the area. The result also shows that women who lived in such relationships develop different strategies to cope with their lives, some were conscious and some were not. These strategies developed by the emotional impact that arose from living with an addictive partner. The dominant characteristics that the respondents expressed were stress, worry and anxiety. The dominant strategy was to try to control to reduce the emotional stress. The women described their relationships with a duality, both euphoric and destructive. The study results can lead to increased knowledge which may contribute to a greater understanding of people with a history of drug use consequences. This situation may lead to that those who are in such relationships faster can get support and they can understand that they are not alone. The increased knowledge can also reduce the taboo coating substance abuse problems.

Muslimska kvinnor: en kvalitativ studie om muslimska kvinnors uppfattning av jämlikhet i ett västerländskt land2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I used qualitative interviews and interviewed five informants to gain a deeper understanding of Muslim women and Muslim perception of equality in a Western country. To be able to answer my questions, I used the thematic approach. My results showed three different themes. What I came up with is that Muslim women's perception of equality in a Western country experienced differently. The informants saw their own religion as something very significant. Religion provides a freedom to move outdoors, education, work and so on. What may be the premise to be Muslim woman is that one must have some garments to be able to move around in public. Some informants claim that Islam has a very important role but in very different ways in different individuals. It was important to emphasize that religion arranges rights for them. Different household chores like cooking and taking care of the kids have nothing to do with Islam but more about culture and tradition. One of the reasons may be that you meet different people who have different views, different interpretations when it comes to the various religious standards, especially woman's roles. This leads on to the women begin to embrace the new changes that take place and the different processes that occur question about just woman's ways of life. It parted widely across informants when it came to certain issues. Some informants could not understand or accept certain things in religion. What all informants agreed was that family life was very important because it is even safe zone. The informants also mentioned that gender roles are still with some families where the woman is at home and the husband is out of work. But the process of globalization has led some religious interpretations have been made, one example is some Muslim women have been able to go out to work and that man has been able to take on more responsibilities at home. In some informants put one family in the first place and themselves in the alternative, if the family was safe, it was them too it. This was something that most of the informants mentioned. The informants rely more on their surroundings than themselves. If one is in a certain way, as expected by others, it leads to you getting good responses and this response is very important for the environment.

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

The year 2013 applied 3852 unaccompanied asylum in Sweden. Sweden is one of the countries in Europe where they have the highest number of asylum seeking unaccompanied children. The municipality is responsible for accommodation, reception, support and care for these children. They are not a homogeneous group but everyone has their own story and experience from both the escape and during the asylum process. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate what unaccompanied children experienced the key to managing the process of escaping from home and the asylum process in Sweden from a coping perspective. Method: The method used in this study is qualitative approach. Data collection was done by nine semi-structured interviews. Results: The results presented various important factors in the exodus from their homeland and also during the asylum process. The most central of the respondents was to have a set goal. The results also showed the importance of the family and to have faith in the future. It was also important to know a meaningfulness which might look differently. During the asylum process was the key to activate themselves, be with friends, school, and to learn the Swedish language. Swedish language was described as very important to feel involved to influence their situation and to get a sense of belonging

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study designed to investigate how professional support group leaders talk about their role as supervisor of support groups for children and adolescents with problematic home situations. We also examine how these supervisors talk about the method they use and how they talk about the individual child. We have chosen critical discourse analysis to help us explore if there are different ways to talk about these territories. Our questions are:

    • How does the support group leader talk about his role?
    • How does the support group leader talk about the method?
    • How does the support group leader talk about the individual child?

The theories we have chosen to use in the analysis of our material is Aaron Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence and social constructivism. We have, as mentioned, chosen to do a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews conducted with seven active support group leaders at three different support group organizations. We transcribed the interviews and coded them separately and then went through the coded material together. The analytical method we have chosen is discourse analysis focusing on Norman Fairclough´s critical discourse analysis. Along with Fairclough´s three-dimensional model, we analyzed the interviews at the following levels: text practice, discursive practice and social practice. Based on our purpose and our questions we managed to distinguish six different discourses, within each territory we found two discourses that stood in contrast to each other. In the territory "How the support group leader talks about his own role," we found the knowledge discourse and the playful discourse. In the territory "How the support group leader talks about the method" we were able to discern a discourse view of the method as complete and a view of the method as adaptable. In the territory "How the support group leader talks about the individual child" we found the discourse about the perception of the child as a subject and the perception of the child as an object. These discourses were put together to constitute two discourse chains which showed two different orientations of the support group leader. We then analyzed these discourse chains our theories and questioned them based on how the two different types of leader’s we located could affect the method’s design and the children participating in support groups. The study concludes with a part in which we compare our results with earlier research within this field followed by suggestions for further research.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate young people's views on responsibility to the individual and society. It is hoped that the study will increase understanding of individual and collective responsibility and how this approach to responsibility is influenced by an individualistic ethos. The study's inquires were;

    - What is the young adults conception of a collective responsibility today?

    - Are the young experiencing a responsibility to the other in an individualized society?

To investigate this, we used Bauman's thoughts on the individualized society, and Buaman & Donskis theories of moral blindness. We also make use of Nicolas Rose governmentality to see the individual's relationship to, and the influence of society. And Giddens' theories of life politics and Third Way politics.

We have carried out six qualitative research interviews to investigate this. The interviews were interpreted with a phenomenological / hermeneutic approach, to analyze them, we use "the constant comparative method" as an analytical tool . The sample was made up of young people aged 20-25 years, we pursued an equal gender balance, and we did not take into account some other selection premises.

The results showed that the informants had a fairly uniform view about collective responsibility, it was important to help those who were worse off than themselves. It was difficult to see the significance of their personal responsibility to the other, it was rather society's collective responsibility to ensure a fully functioning welfare where everyone has the opportunity to get help. We found no one who had a clear individualistic thought about the perception of responsibility. We believe this may be because the informants have been marked by the country's previous political history that still influences a general valuation on a collective responsibility

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The education system in Sweden has not yet formed a sustainable way into higher education and lifelong learning for students with intellectual disabilities. Discussions on inclusive education nationally in society are ongoing but few concrete examples have yet been implemented. This presentation will present experiences from the first attempt to organize and provide courses for students with intellectual disabilities within higher music education in Sweden. Methods: Two courses were given at the Academy of Music in Malmö, Lund University in 2010 and 2011. The content of the first course focused on the history of music, rhythm and ensemble playing. The second one focused on Opera as an art form with both process and product as means of learning. Results & Conclusions: The experiences show the students' capability to develop and enhance musical expression. However, questions concerning (a) the quality of music education currently available to students with ID, (b) pedagogical approaches in the academy, (c) rules for admission to higher education and (d) different attitudes to widening participation within the academies has emerged and need to be processed.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we have examined in which way the horse is used in Equine Assisted Therapy, and what effects the treatment staff experience and describes that the interaction with horses has on girls who self-harms. Our Empirical data was collected through qualitative methods such as interviews, participant observation and informal interviews with a total of six different informants, from five different activities with Equine Assisted Therapy for girls who self-harms. In the analysis we have assumed symbolic interactionism, a theory focusing on the human as a social being, where the self-image alters in the social interaction with other human beings. We interwove this theory with the Biophilia hypothesis, an explanatory model concerning human’s relationship to animals and nature.

The conclusions we have found in the results are:

    • Equine Assisted Therapy is a complementary treatment comprises both horseback riding and exercises which is not based on the horseback
    • Equine Assisted Therapy almost always involves three parts, the therapist, the client and the horse. The therapist constantly interpreters the horse to get information about the clients senses tuning.
    • The horse can be especially useful for sexual abused girls. It can be used as a help for the client in relaxation exercises, and can be a help for the client in body awareness recovery.
    • Equine Assisted Therapy contributes to increased self-confidence, self-esteem and altered self-image
    • The horse has not the ability to lie, which results in a completely honest relationship between the horse and the human.
    • Both the ambient environment and just interacting with the horse can be calming and anxiolytic for the client.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Producing and consuming knowledge in social work practice: Research and development activities in a Swedish context.2009In: Evidence and policy, ISSN 1744-2648, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 127-139Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to describe how experince-based knowledge can be made visible by giving some examples of how this has been done in Swedish social welfare services, in collaborations between social services agencies and research and development (R&D) units. These examples will be linked to theories and discussed in relation to different research utilisation models. By using one of these models, it is argued that R&D activities can broaden the concept of evidence-based practice and help brigde the gap between research and practice.

    Abstract [en]

Since 2003 the University West in Sweden offers distance courses in Social work and Social pedagogy. The three year program is given in collaboration with a number of local learning centers throughout the country. The technology of videoconferencing enables the teacher to interact with students even though they are separated geographically.

The study deals with this kind of education seen from the perspective of both students and teachers. The main objective is to illuminate significant aspects of this kind of phenomenon in terms of how students and teachers describe and experience problems and potential embedded in this model. The discussion rests on four overall questions:

    1) What are the motives for students to choose this kind of education?

    2) What kind of expectations did the students have before they started the program?

    3) How do students experience/describe strengths and weaknesses connected to this model?

    4) What experiences do the teacher's have working with this kind of distance education?

The empirical data has been collected using mainly group interviews and observations. The analysis rests heavily on theories concerning symbolic interactionism and socio-cultural learning. The study underlines that both students and teachers embrace the potential in this form of education, giving more groups the possibility of combining their studies with a sense of regional belonging. However the interviews and observations also reveal weaknesses with this kind of educational model. There is a risk that students at the local learning centers consider themselves as being excluded by teachers and other students at campus; and that the gap between the university and the local learning centers becomes too wide. To prevent this from happening communication and confirmation from the teacher is crucial. But eventhough this scrutiny identifies weaknesses within the technology of videoconferencing, technology alone does not determine the outcome of the teaching. If a teacher manages to show great engagement and structure, this functions as a mechanism weakening the barrierof technology. At the same time it is clear that the model of videoconferencing, from a teacher perspective, can be an obstacle, which emphasizes the importance of developing the technology further and how this technology is being handled by the teacher.

Finally, we consider the model with local learning centers and videoconferencing as a unique model for education, but that the model, when it comes to areas such as pedagogy, organization and technology, must be allowed to function and develop according to its own premises.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose with our study is to examine and analyze how staff in home care services perceive their work situation as well as in what way relations with colleagues or clients may have an impact on this experience. We have chosen a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, which builds on the experience of the interviewed individuals. Our main perspective in this study is the social pedagogy. The theoretical frame consists of social networks and the concepts community and thin networks. The collected data has been coded, categorized, thematised and analyzed in relation to former research and the theoretical perspectives. Our study results indicates that the personnel in home care services feels that they have a good and rewarding work. The contact with the users is experienced as very positive and as the main reason for them to go to work. The personnel also describe the working group as very important and it is to the colleagues they turn to get support. The result of this study clearly shows that relations are of great importance for the individuals understanding of their work situation.

Det svenska prekariatet. Väljarnas medvetna val, eller påtvingad frihet?: Hur våra folkvalda talar om samhället, och därmed skapar det.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Common incentives for teamwork: the unspoken contract´s significance2014In: Team Performance Management, ISSN 1352-7592, E-ISSN 1758-6860, Vol. 20, no 1/2, p. 65-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this article was to identify and study common incentives for teamwork.

Design/methodology/approach - The study was designed as a case study. The case consists of teamwork at a univer-sity hospital. At the hospital, ten psychiatric teams were studied for a period of four years (2008-2011). Each team was followed for 12–18 months. Data were collected through interviews (n = 48) and observations (n = 52) of the teamwork at treatment conferences.

Findings - The common incentives identified consist of shared responsibility, appreciation and long-sightedness. The incidence of a silent contract is highlighted as an explanation for the team's cohesion.

Research limitations/implications - The study is conducted in a public organisation within one field. The results should therefore be interpreted with some caution.

Practical implications - The study is useful for practitioners to understand the importance of common incentives as a collective driving force. By developing well-adapted common incentives, the practical work can be developed, refined and improved.

Originality/value - The significance of common incentives and the unspoken contract in the team is identified.

Doctors’ functional leadership inpsychiatric healthcare teams: a reversible leadership logic2015In: Team Performance Management, ISSN 1352-7592, E-ISSN 1758-6860, Vol. 21, no 3/4, p. 159-180Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to study how psychiatric doctors practise leadership in multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The paper seeks to answer the question: How do psychiatric doctors lead multidisciplinary teams during treatment conferences?

Design/methodology/approach: Six psychiatric teams were studied at a university hospital. Each team was observed over a period of 18 months, and data were collected during four years (2008-2011). Data were collected through interviews with doctors (n19) and observations (n30) of doctors’ work in multidisciplinary psychiatric teams.

Findings: Doctors in a multidisciplinary team use either self-imposed or involuntary leadership style. Oscillating between these two extremes was a strategy for handling the internal tensions of the team.

Research limitations/implications: The study was a case study, performed during treatment conferences at psychiatric wards in a university hospital. This limitation means that there is cause for some caution in generalising the results.

Practical implications: The results are useful for understanding leadership in multidisciplinary medical teams. By understanding the reversible logic of leadership, cooperation and knowledge sharing can be gained, which means that a situation of mere peaceful coexistence can be avoided. Understanding the importance of the informal contract makes it possible to switch leadership among team members. A reversible leadership with an informal contract makes the team less vulnerable. The team’s professionals can thus easily handle dif cult situations and internal tensions, facilitating leadership and management of multidisciplinary teams.

Originality/value: Doctors in multidisciplinary psychiatric teams use reversible leadership

    logic.
