You are a whole woman, with or without children : The experience of suffering miscarriage - a literature study. (English)
Abstract [en]
A miscarriage creates emotional stress, and for most women it is a trauma. As a nurse it is important to meet both her psychological and physical needs. The aim of the study was to describe women's experience when having a miscarriage. An analysis of twelve qualitative studies was performed. As a result of the analysis five themes and eleven subthemes emerged.
The results showed that most women who suffered after a miscarriage experienced it as a sudden announcement, a body in pain, self-esteem is affected, feelings of sadness, and moving on. Many women felt very disappointed towards healthcare when their feelings were not met appropriately. The nurse has a very important role to provide emotional support. If the patient is ignored in the encounter, he/she will not be treated as a whole person with unique and individual needs. The nurse should respect each individual patient and meet the requirements for good nursing care including psychological, physical and emotional aspects. This is important for helping the patient in the best possible way in the grieving-process.
