Facing Death : A literature-based study on Death Anxiety in Patients receiving palliative care (English)
Abstract [en]
Background
Patients with a terminal disease may experience existential distress in the form of death anxiety. This can affect their well-being and quality of life negatively in the end of life. To reduce death anxiety, nurses have a key role in identifying and addressing patient's distress.Aim The aim of this study was to describe the experience of death anxiety in patients with a terminal disease in the end of life.
Method
A qualitative literature-based study based of ten scientific articles. The material was analyzed according to Friberg´s five-step model.
Results
The analysis resulted in three main themes. “Losing life and meaning” described how patients receiving palliative care experienced death anxiety and existential distress when the future became unpredictable and their personal identity was disrupted. “Relationships at the end of life” points out the desire to protect their loved ones from suffering associated with the incurable disease and the fear of separation at the end of life. “Experiencing shortcomings and strengths in healthcare” brings light to the importance of a holistic approach and emotional support from nurses caring for patients with an incurable disease.
Conclusion
Death anxiety plays a significant part in the existential suffering of patients with terminal disease experience. If nurses do not take the time to show their understanding of the patients existential suffering, the patient risks experiencing a stronger sense of death anxiety. By actively listening, being present and with personalized existential support, nurses can reduce this suffering. To create a safe space where patients can express their fears and find peace at the end of life, knowledge, courage and time is required.
