Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of dog therapy as a complementary therapy method for children and adolescents with depression and anxiety.

Background: Mental health, depression and anxiety in particular, is a growing health problem that affects a growing number of young people. In parallel with an increased prescription of psychotropic drugs, there is a decrease in access to psychosocial support. This has created a need for alternative or complementary therapy where a dog can potentially work as a bridge between the child and the therapist.

Method: 12 peer-reviewed articles with quantitative, qualitative and mixed method design, published between 2018 and 2025 was included. The inclusion criteria were children under the age of 18 years with a formal diagnosis or related symptoms of depression and anxiety related to dog therapy. The article was gathered from Google Scholar database and articles from for instance Taylor & Francis, JAMA Network and ResearchGate where used. The article was analysed with a descriptive content analysis with a deductive approach. The predetermined categories were “attachment factors”,” physiological factors” as well as “experiences”.

The result of this study indicates that dog assisted therapy may alleviate anxiety and to some extent depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. There is some physiological evidence to support these findings. In addition, several of the included studies reveal relational patterns that indicate attachment-related dynamics between, not only, the child and dog but also guardians and therapists. Dog therapy can be proposed in two types of interventions, incorporating into existing programs, such as SEL, for preventive purposes or alternatively in the form of traditional therapy sessions.
