Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis presents a comprehensive roadmap for transitioning from manual machine handling to automation within a manufacturing context, with a focus on Brogren Industries.

The study aims to support the initial steps toward automation by developing practical guidelines and proposing robotic cell designs for automating lathe and milling operations. Through a combination of literature review, industry case studies, and expert interviews, the thesis identifies key challenges and best practices in automation implementation. Three robotic cell concepts were designed and simulated using ABB RobotStudio, each eval-uated for efficiency and cost.

The results demonstrate significant reductions in cycle time and highlight the importance of strategic planning, collaboration, and user-centred design. The study concludes with actionable recommendations for manufacturers seeking to adopt automation, emphasizing simplicity, flexibility, and the integration of safety standards.

The findings offer valuable insights for both industry practitioners and researchers in robotics and industrial automation.
