When schools make a difference : A systematic literature review in interventions in school environments for mental illness (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Mental health is something that affects a lot of people and not least children and young adults. Year 2024, a total of 64 004 children seeked help from BRIS, where 44% of the calls referred to mental health issues. On average 22 children commits suicide every year in sweden and besides that, many children hesitate to ask for help. This is because they are afraid of what the surroundings are going to think. School is a primary location to raise awareness and identify children and young adults regarding their mental health. In the school environment the staff have the opportunity to notice and support the students who experience mental health issues.
Aim: The aim of this paper is to analyze how schools work with structured measures and knowledge development in the school environment to prevent and to acknowledge mental health among students.
Method: The method that was used is a systematic litterateur review, where a total of 10 articles were included. Articles that were included referred to different intervention programs to increase the mental health among students as well as the knowledge of mental health issues, and different screening tools to how to notice students that are expiring mental health issues.
Results: The results showed that the school environment has deficient knowledge about mental health issues. Also stigmatized attitudes and opinions emerged in the school environment. With help from the intervention programs the knowledge increased, in both students and school staff. This knowledge contributed to students and school staff could notice behavior patterns that are common to mental health issues. This occurred both in students but also students among themselves. Together with the screening tool, school staff could notice mental health issues among the students and therefore were able to support them in time.
Conclusion: By this bachelor's thesis, it emerged that structural initiatives in school aimed to identify and preventing mental illness among students, revealed a lack of knowledge. The lack of knowledge within the school environment was expressed through stigmatization. Stigmatizing attitudes and opinions contribute to students not speaking about their mental health. The structured initiatives that were identified aimed to increase knowledge and understanding of mental illness. Screeiningtools also emerged, intended to identify students experiencing mental health issues. The school environment proved to play a central role in the work to prevent and identify mental illness among students.
