Abstract [en]

This report compares two different network monitoring tools, NagiosXI and PRTG, to find out which one is easier and more effective to use. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses helps IT administrators choose the right tool for their needs. The results can be used to improve monitoring in real networks and make better decisions when selecting monitoring software, both using the SNMP protocol. The goal was to investigate which tool is simpler and better for monitoring network devices. We tested the tools in a lab environment at University West, using Cisco switches to collect data about CPU us-age, bandwidth, memory, and the status of ports and devices. We conducted several tests to compare the tools, such as how quickly they detected problems and how clearly alarms were presented. To further enhance our results, we also conducted a survey with ten students from the network engineering program. The results showed that PRTG was easier to use due to its clear interface and automated fea-tures. NagiosXI was better suited for advanced users requiring more control and customization. The conclusion is that both tools are effective, but the choice depends on the user's needs and expertise. For quick and simple results, PRTG is recommended, while Nagi-osXI is preferable for experienced users with specific requirements.
