Abstract [en]
This thesis explores how African FinTech firms expand from one African country to another, focusing on the strategies, challenges, and capabilities involved in their internationalization processes. Using a qualitative, exploratory case study approach, the research investigates a leading South African FinTech company’s cross-border expansion into markets such as Uganda, Nigeria, and Ghana. Guided by the Born Global theory, the OLI (Ownership-Location-Internalization) framework, the Resource-Based View (RBV), and digital transformation and innovation diffusion theories, the study identifies five key themes: international expansion strategies, competitive capabilities, challenges of expansion, change management, and technology as a driver.
The findings reveal that acquisition-led growth, driven by technological synergy, leadership’s global mindset, and regulatory readiness, is central to the firm's expansion. Challenges such as regulatory complexity, talent attrition, and integration issues are mitigated through strategic resource deployment and adaptive organizational practices.
The thesis contributes to international business studies by applying established frameworks in the under-researched context of African FinTechs and offers practical insights for firms, investors, and policymakers supporting digital financial expansion across Africa.
