From Scrolling to Purchasing : A Qualitative Study on the Factors Influencing Purchase Decision Among Generation Z in relation to Advertising on TikTok and Meta (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In an increasingly digitalized world, the use of social media among young people is greater than ever before. It has also become one of the largest market places for companies to bevisible and operate in. Today, social media largely consists of advertising in various forms, with some types of advertising being more clearly identifiable than others. Companies today almost exclusively use social media to reach a large number of potential customers, partly through advertisements and partly through collaborations with various influential individuals on different platforms.

The boundary between what is considered purely entertaining content and what is in fact advertising is more blurred than ever, which has placed consumers in a new type of vulnerable situation.

The aim of the study is, through a qualitative approach, to examine which factors influence the purchase decisions of consumers belonging to Generation Z, based on advertising on Meta (Facebook & Instagram) and TikTok. The study applies a qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews using a cross-sectionaldesign.

This research method has been chosen based on the aim of the study and in order to answer the research questions. Existing literature within the field has almost exclusively used quantitative research methods, which further inspired the choice of a qualitative method. The study's empirical data and subsequent discussion are based on Kotler’s buyer decision process and the S-O-R model. This is done in order to build on the existing research within the area.

The conclusion of the study is that it is not possible to identify a single specific factor that determines purchase decisions based on advertising on Meta (Facebook & Instagram) and TikTok. Instead, purchase decisions depend on several different factors. Some factors tend to be more strongly connected to purchase decisions than others, such as the feeling of trust in influencers, the relevance of the advertising, and the consumers’ ability to recognize themselves in the content. Through the use of a qualitative method, the study provides more in-depth insights and new knowledge about how Generation Z consumers both interpret and respond to advertising on social media. These insights create incentives for further research, which in turn may help protect consumers, but also support companies in improving their marketing strategies.
