Development of a Production Technology Laboratory : An Initial Concept (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis has been carried out with the aim of identifying needs and developing an initial proposal for a production technology laboratory, with a particular focus on digitalization, learning, and collaboration between University West and enterprise. The laboratory is intended to serve as a shared platform for research, education, and technological development, with specific relevance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). At present, digitalization often entails significant investments and uncertainty for SMEs, which the proposed laboratory aims to address. By offering a low risk environment for testing and applying digital solutions tailored to the needs of businesses, both innovation and competence development can be promoted without requiring substantial initial investments. An additional goal is to strengthen collaboration between University West and the regional business community in Trollhättan.

The project was conducted using the Design Thinking methodology, with data collection carried out through interviews, observations, and benchmarking. These activities were conducted at reference laboratories, within SMEs, and with staff at University West. The purpose was to identify the needs and challenges experienced by key stakeholders. A literature study was also conducted to deepen the understanding of the subject area.

The results consist of a summary of the identified needs, which formed the foundation for the initial concept proposal. The proposed solution is a scalable and modular laboratory concept, focused on digital tools such as MES systems and digital twin simulation, resulting in a user-centered, flexible, and digitally adapted design. The project has thus established a solid foundation for continued development while also highlighting the need for further exploration of the laboratory’s pedagogical applications and technical potential in future contexts. The concept was iteratively developed in close collaboration with key project stakeholders and representatives from SMEs, resulting in a concrete and needs based proposal.

The analysis reflects a clear alignment between identified needs, theoretical foundations, and the applied methodology. This integration has enabled a user-centered, flexible, and digitally oriented solution, reinforcing the coherence of the work and providing a stable basis for continued advancement.
