Background: Through physical activity, children improve their gross motor skills as well as increase their physical and mental well-being. Physical activity also promotes learning, improves concentration and has been proven to enhance school results. Nowadays, children are not sufficiently physically active, which can be explained by lessened spontaneous play and increased amount of sedentary behavior. Inequalities regarding physical activity in relation to gender identity and socioeconomics are described. The school nurse’s health-promoting initiative in the school with children is carried out through health conversations.
Aim: The purpose was to describe school nurse’s furthering of school children’s physical activity.
Method: A systematic literature review with an integrative design was conducted according to Whittemore & Knafls’ (2005) methodology. The data collection was carried out through systematic searches in Cinahl and PubMed and the result consists of 13 scientific articles.
Results: Three themes with respective sub-themes emerged from the result. The initial theme is Focusing on the child’s world with the related sub-themes In the meeting with the child, To apply the children’s perspective when conversing and Guiding children from sedentary behavior. The second theme is The surrounding of the child followed by the sub-themes Parental involvement and Challenges around the child. Ultimately, the final theme is Conditions for promotion with the sub-themes Tools and interventions, Collaboration with other professions and When resources are constrained.
Conclusion: Children’s sedentary behavior is problematic to the extent of being described as a public health issue. The school nurse’s furthering of the school children’s physical activity has its genesis in the child as an individual when promoting through conversations and interventions. Additionally, collaboration with other professionals at the school as well as parents occurs. It becomes apparent how the work of the school nurse could evolve regarding this domain. Nonetheless, there are challenges and factors affecting the furtherance which are beyond the school nurse’s direct ability to alter. Raising awareness regarding this among school nurses could reduce the probability of risk for occupational stress.
