Enticed by a flop : Animated “So bad it’s good” films and how we watch and talk about them om YouTube (English)
Abstract [en]
In this essay we look at the phenomenon of “So bad it’s good” in animation. “So bad it’s good” means when a cultural expression fails to achieve what we traditionally associate with high quality entertainment, but through its total failure to live up to those standards, it is experienced by a selected few as very comical and thus creates a following.
We have looked at this phenomenon by analyzing how it is talked about by doing a quantitative analysis of the comment section on reviews of two different films on YouTube, namely FoodFight! (2012) and Bratz Super Babyz (2007). We have chosen this because we believe that the phenomenon is something that is born from a participatory viewing of the film, where viewers contribute to how we understand a film through conversation with each other and we see the comment sections as a good aggregator for these conversations. The concept of participatory culture was coined by media researcher Henry Jenkins and refers to when the boundary between producer and consumer is blurred and in this way the audience becomes equally instrumental in how we see this cultural expression.
The conclusion we reached was that the comments often landed in a third layer of participation, where the comments revolve around the review in question, which in itself is a form of participatory cultural expression as these often comedic reviews create added value to the film in question. As a result, the comments often became additive to what was expressed in the review, more than to the film being reviewed.
Abstract [sv]
I denna uppsats tittar vi på fenomenet “So bad it’s good” inom animation.
