CGI in Anatomy Education : A Qualitative Study on Digital Visualization, Pedagogical Application, and Learning Outcomes in Medical Education (English)
Abstract [en]
Computer Generated Imagery, or CGI as it is also called, is a very useful digital tool to visualize things that we cannot make in real life or that would take way longer to make by hand. It has been used in both video games, animated movies, architecture, marketing, product design, and even in the context of education where anatomy studies are included. CGI has been used before to create physical models of organs for students, digital models of anatomical structures in 3D and even to visualize molecular processes in the body. Is CGI being used as it sounds, or is the truth more complicated than a yes or no?
The purpose of this study is to research how CGI is perceived and used in anatomical education where a large focus will be on the experiences of both the students and professionals. Other things that also will be researched are the educational and technical factors that affect the usage of CGI and illustrate how these factors tie together with understanding, interactivity and accessibility.
The study will implement visualizing theory and design theory to contribute with insights of how CGI can be integrated and developed further in medical education in the future. The study concluded that CGI has a prominent position in anatomical education where it is not just about technical help but also how we understand and convey knowledge. CGI may have an ability to make complex scientific information more understandable but it also has limitations where many point out that it cannot replace physical meetings with people. In other words it works better as a complement and not as a replacement for existing methods.
