The Use of GenAI in Animated film Production processes (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research study was to investigate how generative AI affects creative creation in animated films and how the use of generative AI affects ethical aspects. In this study a qualitative research method is used with interviews to find out people's individual perceptions of the use of AI tools in the animation industry. One of the interview questions was that the participants were asked to watch two different animated films and decide which one was created by AI, and which one was created by humans. The answer to this question would help the study to find out what the difference between these films are and what AI tools can be used for.

The research study chose to focus on Swedish animation companies and did not consider how the entire film industry is affected by the use of generative AI. A total of seven people were interviewed in the study and two of them were entrepreneurs and the rest were students and teachers at the University West in Trollhättan. The selected survey population was chosen due to the size and accessibility of the research study.

The results of the study show that there is currently uncenterlety about whether generative AI will replace the creative process within animated film production. Generative AI is still today dependent on human participation in processes, because the AI cannot come up with its own ideas yet. What AI tools will likely be used for in the future is automation or efficiency, where AI can be used to do the work that animators find time-consuming.
