In the Zone : A Qualitative Study on Flow and Effectiveness in 3D Work (English)
Abstract [en]
Flow describes a phenomenon related to individuals' engagement and performance in the activity they are engaged in. The experience has been formulated into nine principles, which have been studied in everyday and elite contexts alike.Despite criticism of the theory's operationalization, this study focuses on how the principles manifest themselves in the 3D industry.
The aim is to investigate the significance of flow theory for efficiency and performance in the daily work of 3D artists, with a particular focus on factors that affect said efficiency.Eight 3D artists with varying degrees of experience were interviewed to explore their experiences of the nine flow principles in their day-to-day work. The results highlight clear goals and feedback (responsiveness) in software as particularly important factors for elevated flow experience in 3D work. A number of specific observations are highlighted in the discussion of the results, which can guide future professional practice towards more efficient 3D work.
