Background: Violence in close relationships can be classified as a major public health issue that literally affects women globally and in worst cases, lead to severe psychological or physical consequences. Nurses play an important role in recognizing and assisting women exposed to domestic violence because nurses are the first to encounter these women in medical environments. Notwithstanding, discerning signs of abuse can prove difficult due to various factors. Gaining awareness into nurses´ experiences in identifying these women is imperative for providing appropriate support and intervention.Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experiences of identifying women exposed to violence in close relationships.

Method: The chosen method was a literature review and eight scientific articles from 2015 - 2025 were analysed.

Results: Three themes and eight subthemes emerged from the analysis following: Relational barriers in the encounter with patients with the subthemes Uncertainty about how to ask the question about violence, Language barriers hinder trust and The patient is unwilling to open up for conversation. Insufficient organizational support with the subthemes Insufficient training on the subject of violence in close relationships, Lack of time and high workload and Unclear guidelines. Cultural barriers that make violence invisible with the subthemes Normalization of violence in certain cultural contexts and Culture of silence around violence.

Conclusion: The results showed that nurses require more training, clear routines and both organizational and cultural support to be able to detect women subjected to violence. Nurses are expected to build safe relationships that are characterized by trust and sensitivity, so that women feel comfortable talking about their situation.

Trots att många kvinnor som blivit utsatta för våld söker hjälp inom sjukvården, får deras situation inte alltid den uppmärksamhet den förtjänar. Sjuksköterskor spelar en viktig roll i att upptäcka om någon blivit utsatt för våld, men det kan vara en utmaning att ställa frågor om detta eftersom det ofta saknas klara rutiner och kunskap om hur sjuksköterskor ska gå tillväga. Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att identifiera kvinnor utsatta för våld i nära relationer.

Denna studie är en litteraturöversikt av kvantitativ och kvalitativ forskning och grundas på analys av åtta vetenskapliga artiklar. Resultaten identifierade tre teman och åtta underteman. Fynden visade att sjuksköterskor ofta känner tveksamhet kring hur frågan om våld ska ställas samt hur sjuksköterskor ska agera i sådana situationer. Det framkom också att brist på utbildning och otydliga riktlinjer har utgjort hinder för att identifiera våld. Dessutom visar resultatet att det behövs utbildning, klara riktlinjer samt stöd från ledningen på arbetsplatsen för att sjuksköterskor ska kunna känna sig trygga och säkra i att ta upp ämnet våld inom vården.
