Factors of importance for perceived health in ADHD : An integrative systematic literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disability that often involves challenges with attention, impulse control and hyperactivity and can affect the ability to function in everyday life. Medical treatment is common, but does not always have the desired effect and many choose to discontinue their treatment. Nutrition, physical activity and sleep are factors that affect both physical and mental health and can have a positive impact on the well-being of the person with ADHD. By exploring and highlighting the relationship between these factors and their effects on ADHD symptoms and the experience of health, more sustainable care can be promoted.

Purpose: To explore factors that affect the experience of health for adults with ADHD.

Method: An integrative literature review was conducted by searching the databases Cinahl, Pubmed and Psycinfo/Psycarticle, 15 studies were selected and the analysis resulted in three themes.

Results: consisted of the themes; Increased well-being, Stigma and negative attitudes from healthcare and society, and Symptom relief. It was important to understand one's diagnosis and feel connected, as well as factors such as stigma and negative attitudes from healthcare and society. Other factors that emerged were the importance of sleep for managing everyday life, the importance of diet and dietary supplements, and how physical activity could contribute to increased motivation, among other things.

Conclusion: There are several helpful factors that can contribute to better health for people with ADHD, but the knowledge gap is large.
