Abstract [en]
This thesis investigates which macroeconomic factors have influenced changes in Swedish household indebtedness between 2007 and 2024. Using quarterly data, the study applies Augmented Dickey-Fuller tests to assess stationarity and performs a multiple regression analysis in first differences. The findings indicate that changes in household savings (savings rate), inflation, housing prices, and lagged GDP growth are significantly associated with changes in the household debt-to-income ratio. Inflation and savings have a reducing effect on debt growth, while rising housing prices and delayed GDP effects are positively related with increased indebtedness. Interestingly, interest rate costs also show a positive short-term association with debt growth, suggesting a delayed household response. Demographic variables were excluded due to non-stationarity, limiting the study’s ability to empirically test fully the life-cycle-based consumption theories. The results underscore the importance of understanding dynamic and lagged effects in household financial behavior and suggest that systemic policy measures should account for these patterns. Future research should apply cointegration techniques and microdata to explore long-term relationships and variation across different household groups.
