This study explores how visualization of data could be used to improve decision-making and cooperation in care and welfare, with a focus on the admission and discharge processes in the region of Västra Götaland. The work was carried out in collaboration with GITS, where a visualization tool has been developed in order to create more readily available and up-to-date information for stakeholders within healthcare. Through the use of a qualitative case study with interviews of staff from varying levels of health and social care the study has identified how visualization can overcome comprehension difficulties of complex healthcare flows, promote cooperation between healthcare stakeholders and give better support for capacity planning. The result shows that a user-friendly visualization tool can contribute to identifying trends and discrepancies, and also improve real-time follow-up and decision-making. The study also highlights juridical and technical challenges combined with managing patient data, and also the importance of designing tools from the needs of different staff roles. The conclusion is that there is a large potential to make health care processes more efficient through the use of visualization tools, but that further development and adjustments are needed to reach the full potential.
