Abstract [en]

Nepal's geographical complexity and climatic variability have made it highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Effective disaster risk communication is therefore critical to minimizing human and material losses. Mobile technology, including SMS alerts, mobile applications, and social media platforms, has emerged as an essential tool for disaster communication worldwide. However, in Nepal, there remains a significant gap in understanding how effectively mobile-based disaster alerts reach and influence different segments of the population. This study focuses on how effectively mobile technology is used for disaster communication in Sindhupalchok District. We used a structured survey method, reaching out to 200 mobile phone users across different age groups, education levels, and technology familiarity. The aim was to understand how often people receive mobile disaster alerts, how well they understand them, and whether those alerts lead to real action. Preliminary expectations suggest that while mobile technology has broad potential, barriers such as digital divides, language comprehension issues, and trust deficits may limit its effectiveness. By providing empirical insights, the research seeks to inform policy recommendations for enhancing the inclusivity and reliability of mobile-based disaster communication systems in Nepal, thereby contributing to greater national disaster resilience
