Background Pediatric overweight and obesity constitute a growing global public health issue with far-reaching consequences. Nurses play a key role in the early identification of riskfactors, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and the support of families through dialogue and individualized guidance.

Aim To explore parents’ perceptions of communication with nurses regarding their child’s overweight or obesity.

Method A systematic literature review with an inductive approach. The results are based on articles with a qualitative design. The data analysis followed Evans' (2003) interpretive synthesis and was carried out in four steps.

Results During the analysis of the results, three main themes and 13 subthemes emerged. The first theme, Conversations that evoke emotions, was followed by six subthemes: An emotionally charged topic, Challenges in the conversations, Concern about the child’s presence, Experiences and perceptions of the child’s body and weight development, Perception of insufficient information and questionable advice, and Distrust in BMI. The second theme, Parents’ expectations of the nurse, included three subthemes: Perceptions of the roles of different healthcare professionals, Parents’ experiences and views on the nurse’s qualities, and Parents’ perceived expectations of the nurse’s role. The final theme, When the conversation fails, was followed by four subthemes: Desire for flexible and individualized advice, The importance of language and approach, Parents’ experience of time constraints and stress in the conversations and Building a trusting relationship.

Conclusion The study highlights that communication between nurses and caregivers about pediatric overweight is a complex and emotionally sensitive process that demands knowledge, empathy, and cultural awareness. It also underscores the need for organizational support and further research to promote children’s health in a sustainable way.

Bakgrund: Barns övervikt och obesitas är ett växande globalt folkhälsoproblem med långtgående konsekvenser, där sjuksköterskan har en central roll i att tidigt identifiera risker, främja hälsosamma levnadsvanor och stödja familjer genom samtal och individanpassad rådgivning.

Syfte: Att undersöka vårdnadshavares upplevelser av kommunikation om deras barns övervikt eller obesitas med sjuksköterskan

Metod: En systematisk litteraturstudie med induktiv ansats. Resultat bygger på artiklar med kvalitativ design. Dataanalysen följde Evans (2003) tolkande datasyntes och genomfördes i fyra steg.

Resultat: Vid analyseringen av resultatet framkom tre teman och 13 sub-teman. Första temat Samtal som väcker känslor följdes av sex sub-teman; Ett känsloladdat ämne, Utmaningar i samtalen, Oro över barnets närvaro, Upplevelser och föreställningar om barnets kropp och viktutveckling, Upplevelsen av otillräcklig information och Tvivelaktig rådgivning samt Misstro till BMI. Andra temat Vårdnadshavares förväntningar på sjuksköterskan följdes av tre sub-teman; Uppfattningar om vårdpersonalens olika roller, Vårdnadshavares upplevelseroch syn på sjuksköterskans egenskaper och Vårdnadshavares upplevda förväntningar på sjuksköterskans roll. Sista temat När samtalet brister följdes av fyra sub-teman; Önskan om flexibel och individanpassad rådgivning, Språket och bemötandets betydelse, Vårdnadshavares upplevelse av tidsbrist och stress i samtalen och Att skapa en förtroendefull relation.

Slutsats: Studien visar att kommunikationen mellan sjuksköterska och vårdnadshavare kring barns övervikt är komplex och kräver både kunskap, empati och kulturell medvetenhet, samt belyser behovet av organisatoriskt stöd och vidare forskning för att främja barns hälsa på ett hållbart sätt.
