Abstract [en]
This study explored the transformative role of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) and Social Identity Theory (SIT) in facilitating language acquisition and sense of belonging among refugees in Sweden. Drawing on experiential and social learning theories by Schön, Kolb, Vygotsky, Billett, and Gibbons, the research highlighted how learning Swedish in authentic workplace settings accelerated linguistic proficiency and deepened identity formation into the host society. Refugee participants reported that workplace-based language learning through tasks such as report writing, attending meetings, daily reflection, and engaging in peer feedback was significantly more effective than traditional classroom instruction. These real-world interactions fostered not only rapid language development but also a sense of identity formation. The findings also support Social Identity Theory, underscoring that language served as a critical gateway to both personal empowerment and sense of belonging in the Swedish context. Ultimately, WIL and VET emerged as practical and socially integrative frameworks that supported refugees in their journey toward linguistic proficiency and societal integration.
