This study is going to explore programming students' experience with generative AI (GenAI) and what the students consider the pros, cons and the current limitations of GenAI. The research questions for this study are “How do programming students from a university reflect over what to send to generative AI when they are programming?” and “Why do programming students from a university use GenAI when they are programming?” Literature review for this study was made through Business Source Ultimate. This study is a qualitative study that made semi-structured interviews with the help of eight respondents that studied the program informatics in a university. The result of this study shows that students use GenAI as a communication tool to study effectively and save time and these were the positive aspects from GenAI. When it comes to limitations the problem was that GenAI had a tendency to hallucinate and give out old information and these aspects are identified as the negative aspects of GenAI. How the students use GenAI can be seen as a communication tool. The conclusion of this study shows that students send code snippets or describe the problem they have to GenAI. Everyone who participated avoided sending personal information. Why they use the digital tool is said to be for brainstorming ideas, generating code, compiling information and moving forwards from where they are stuck.
