Abstract [en]
The background of this study arises from the aspiration to automate parts of the production flow in a painting workshop at Saab. Currently, all processes are performed manually but processes such as painting, sanding and paint mixing are potential candidates for automation. This study focuses of automating the painting process by introducing a robot in the painting cell. By visualizing the current state and potential future scenarios through simulation, Saab aims to gain valuable insights to support investment decisions. Flow charts and previously conducted time studies were available, but part of the work involved verifying their accuracy through observations and interviews.
Discrete Event Simulation is a widely used tool for modelling and improving production processes. The model was built incrementally with continuous testing, verification and validation to ensure the models accuracy for its intended purpose. Along with the simulation study, interviews were conducted with an expert within automation implementation, specifically towards industrial robotic painting. These interviews were carried out to gain a clearer understanding of the key challenges and considerations necessary for a successful robotics implementation.
The results of the simulation study were two simulation models, one representing the current state and the other representing a potential future scenario. These models were handed over to Saab for further development and utilization. Based on the interviews and discussions regarding implementation of automation, key aspects were identified and linked to current and future production. These findings, along with suggestions for further development with the simulation model, can serve as a foundation for future investment decisions.
