Understanding the unseen : young adult's experiences of living with cancer (English)
Abstract [en]

Background - A cancer diagnosis affects a young adult differently than it does an older person. One's social environment changes, a younger person may not have a family or a robust social sphere to rely on when diagnosed with cancer. The emotional impact of cancer alters a person's perspective and outlook on their lives. Health as a nursing concept is an important aspect of caring; an individual's perception of their own health can radically change the outcome of their life journey.

Aim - The aim of this study was to obtain insight into young adult's experiences of living with cancer.

Method - The method used in this study was a literature review. A systematic search of two medical databases; Cinahl and Pubmed was performed to compile current research and to answer the aim of this study. Only qualitative articles were chosen to represent the results.

Results - A feeling of social isolation was prevalent in a few young adults. They experienced that their relationships with their friends and family were altered by cancer, often in a negative way. Young adults also experienced losing trust in their own bodies; scars, fatigue or hair loss caused by cancer affected their sense of identity. Fertility concerns were also an issue. A feeling that life was on hold was experienced as well. The need for adequate support and a sense of community were important aspects to young adults living with cancer.

Conclusion - Young adults face different challenges regarding social environments and the way they are meant to live their lives in relation to societal norms. A sense of community should be achieved to promote the idea of health and bolster the emotional well-being of a young adult suffering from cancer. A Nurse should be able to identify specific needs and create an environment where young cancer patients can thrive and explore their own identities.
