Truck mobile energy storage system (TMESS) effects on electric vehicles’ costs
University West, Department of Engineering Science.
2025 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The thesis discusses the impact of truck mobile energy storage systems (TMESSs) on the costs and efficiency of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), particularly in the context of public transportation, such as taxis in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This study highlights that TMESSs can effectively reduce the total operation costs of BEVs, which include energy, battery depreciation, and service costs, while also minimizing charging time. The research introduces multiple charging models that combine TMESSs and stationary energy storage systems (SESSs), demonstrating that TMESSs are more effective in reducing costs and overall charging time when arranged correctly with SESSs.

The findings indicate that TMESSs self-charge during off-peak times, leading to lower energy costs and enhanced driver satisfaction, which reaches up to 87% in certain models. The study concludes that using TMESSs not only decreases the total charging time of BEVs but also improves user satisfaction compared to relying solely on SESSs. Overall, this researchemphasizes the potential of TMESSs to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles by addressing infrastructure limitations and reducing operational costs.
