Life After Surviving Sepsis : A Literature Study about survivors experiences (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body´s immune system overreacts to an infection. The number of people who survive sepsis is constantly increasing and many experiences long-term complications that affect their health and quality of life.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experience of health in people who have survived sepsis.

Method: This study is an integrative compilation of qualitative research inspired by metasynthesis based on nine qualitative studies, using Friberg´s model with five steps for analyzing qualitative studies.

Results: Three themes and six subthemes were identified. The theme “loss of independence” described how sepsis survivors experienced a loss of independence due to physical limitations and being dependent on others. The second theme “the inner struggle” was about how survivors went through an inner struggle characterized by psychological difficulties, a struggle to accept their changed life situation and find motivation. The third theme “positive and negative influence of external factors” highlighted that survivors were influenced by external factors, such as inadequate information from healthcare professionals and support from loved ones. They experienced a lack of information about sepsis, its complications and aftercare.

Conclusion: The study reveals that sepsis survivors face various challenges impacting their health and well-being. It emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to better understand and have more knowledge about their needs to provide adequate support and information. A holistic, person-centered approach is crucial to promoting their health and wellbeing.
