‘Will Forever be That Bitch’: A study of the meaning and reclamation of female aimed slur 'bitch’ in rap lyrics
University West, Department of Social and Behavioural Studies.
2024 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This thesis examines rap lyrics by female rappers and investigates if the term ‘bitch’ has undergone a reclamation process or if it has changed meaning between the time periods 1994 to 2024. The method for investigating this is done through a corpus analysis of 36 songs published between the years 1994 to 2024 performed by 12 different female rap artists.

Phrases in the songs containing the term ‘bitch’ was categorized into three different categories: Negative connotation, Positive connotation and Neutral connotation. The results showed that the term ‘bitch’ has gained new areas of usage throughout its development from its origin to modern use, meaning that the term has changed meaning. Female rap artists’ self-labeling with the term further shows that female rap artists have started a reclamation process of the term within the rap culture where the term is highly used.
