Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines the relationship between gender equality in the division of responsibilities and satisfaction in romantic relationships. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were collected through a self-constructed survey with self-report questions, reaching 1403 women who are committed in heterosexual romantic relationships. A correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship (r = .65) between gender equality in the division of responsibilities and satisfaction in romantic relationships. Regression analysis showed that this gender equality in the division of responsibilities explained a significant portion (R² = 0.418, beta = .65) of relationship satisfaction. Other variables, such as children, relationship length, age, and cohabitation, did not have statistically significant effects on satisfaction. Although causality cannot be established, the results suggest that gender equality in the division of responsibilities may be a central factor in relationship satisfaction. Previous research shows positive consequences of increased gender equality in romantic relationships. As gender equality in the division of responsibilities increases, women are more likely to engage in paid work, and men are given the opportunity to contribute more to the home and family. Furthermore, the study discusses whether the basic needs of selfdetermination theory (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) could compensate for the lack of gender equality in the division of responsibilities. The topic appears to be a reasonable area for further investigation in future research.
