AI’s impact on accounting (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Digitalization and the use of AI have increased in recent years, which it can bring a change for organizations and different professional roles. One of the industries affected by the increasing use of AI is the accounting industry and the profession of accountants. Previous studies show that the use of AI in accounting affects the professional role of accountants, however, there is not enough information on the extent to which AI is used or how accountants are affected in the industry.

The purpose of the paper is to create an understanding of the use and impact of artificial intelligence in accounting. To create a deeper understanding of AI's use and impact, a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews was used. The interviews were conducted with six different accountants from different accounting firms, ranging from small to large accounting firms. The paper shows that AI is increasingly used in all accounting firms, but the extent may vary depending on the size of the organization. Furthermore, the impact of AI is leading to changes in professional roles, with some of the tasks that are repetitive being automated. The changes caused by AI are perceived as positive from the perspective of accountants in the industry. The majority of accountants see AI as an aid and a tool that makes their work more efficient.
