Bakgrund:

Urininkontinens, ofrivilligt läckage av urin är en folksjukdom och är vanligt förekommande problem hos äldre. Antalet individer som besväras av urininkontinens ökar med åldern. Urininkontinens har visat sig påverka alla aspekter av välbefinnande hos en människa som lider av sjukdomen vilket i sin tur påverkat livskvalitén. Distriktssköterskans arbete grundar sig på att erbjuda stöd till individer i alla åldersgrupper och med olika sjukdomar, med fokus på att främja hälsa.

Syfte: Att beskriva kvinnors erfarenheter av att leva med urininkontinens och hur det påverkar deras livskvalitet.

Metod:

En integrativ litteraturstudie med både kvalitativ och kvantitativ forskning enligt Whittemore och Knaf:s analysmodell.

Resultat:

Av nio artiklar kom resultatet fram till tre kategorier: skapar utanförskap, skapar osäkerhet och skapar omställning samt sex subkategorier: Isolering, bristande kunskap, oro, stress, anpassning, att söka stöd. Äldre kvinnor upplever försämrad livskvalité på grund av urininkontinens där de får begränsa sina sociala liv och anpassa sig efter sjukdomen, undviker att söka vård då de har en uppfattning om att sjukdomen uppstår med åldern samt upplever skamkänslor i samband med att dölja sin urininkontinens för andra.

Slutsats:

Äldre kvinnor har fått anpassa sina liv efter sjukdomen vilket bidragit till en del begränsningar för hur de ska leva sitt liv. Att erbjuda utbildning och diskutera med patientenkan förbättra livskvalitén därför bör en specialistsjuksköterska med sin specialkompetens anpassa vården efter patienten och utgå från patientens livssituation.

Background:

Urinary incontinence, the involuntary leakage of urine, is a common disease and a prevalent problem among the elderly. The number of individuals troubled by urinary incontinence increases with age. Urinary incontinence has been shown to affect all aspects of well-being in a person suffering from the condition, which in turn impacts their quality of life. The work of district nurses is based on offering support to individuals of all age groups and with various diseases, focusing on promoting health.

Aim:

To describe women's experiences of living with urinary incontinence and how it affects their quality of life.

Method:

An integrative literature review incorporating both qualitative and quantitative research according to Whittemore and Knafl's analysis model.

Results:

From nine articles, the results were categorized into three categories: creating exclusion, creating uncertainty, and creating adaptation, as well as six subcategories: Isolation, lack of knowledge, worry, stress, adaptation, and seeking support. Older women experience decreased quality of life due to urinary incontinence where they have to limit their social lives and adapt to the disease, avoid seeking medical care because they believe the disease comes with age, and experience feelings of shame associated with hiding their urinary incontinence from others. 

Conclusion:

Older women have had to adjust their lives to the disease, which has led to some limitations on how they live their lives. Offering education and discussing with the patient can improve quality of life; therefore, a specialist nurse with their expertise should tailor the care to the patient and base it on the patient's life situation.
