Abstract [en]
This thesis work explores the integration of attack surface assessment into the vulnerability management process by using a custombuilt tool, tailored for the needs of a specific environment. The main objective is to enhance risk assessment and mitigation strategies by incorporating findings from attack surface evaluations into vulnerability management, utilizing heatmap for visualization, for better risk prioritization.
Background
Cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, and organizations face increasing challenges in managing their attack surfaces – the totality of potential entry points for malicious actors. Traditional vulnerability management focuses on identifying and addressing vulnerabilities but often lacks integration with attack surface assessments, which can provide a more holistic view of potential risks.
Methods and Results
The thesis involves creating a controlled virtual environment that simulates a small to mediumsized organization’s network, including various roles and devices typical of a cybersecurity company. This environment was used to conduct network scans and vulnerability as-sessments using tools like Nmap and OpenVAS. A Python-based script was developed to generate heatmap visualizations that integrate the results of these assessments, offering a clear visual representation of vulnerabilities across different network segments. This approach allowed for enhanced visibility of the network’s security posture and improved the prioritization of remediation efforts.
Conclusions
The integration of attack surface assessments into vulnerability management processes significantly enhances an organization’s ability to identify and mitigate risks. The heatmap visualization tool developed as part of this project provides cybersecurity professionals with a method for assessing vulnerabilities in a structures and actionable way, ultimately leading to more effective resource allocation and strategic decision-making in cybersecurity risk management. This research contributes to the field by offering a practical, scalable solution for improving the integration of attack surface data into existing vulnerability management frameworks.
