We live in a so called society of information, the spirit of the time is that everybody should be able assimilating information about almost everything and everybody. In this report it has been examined how availability of information on different languages is on the websites of some of the Swedish authorities that persons of different reasons need to have knowledge of and how the information is to be found.

It turned out that the number of languages that the authorities choose to have information in differs between the authorities websites and that there is no common approach. Some of the websites of the authorities only have English in addition to Swedish and more are on the way to going in that direction and thus removing information in other languages. It’s reasoned that technical tools that translate text is used in a larger extent and that it is then an advantage if information is available in English as the majority of such tools are considered better at handling English than other languages. By then persons themselves can get the text translated to their own preferred language. Other authorities try to have information in as many as possible of the languages they believe are most used in Sweden.

The study also shows that the language choices on some of the authority websites are placed in a way that makes them difficult to find and this can then result in that the information is not being accessed by those who are concerned and need the information.The authorities have different thoughts about which languages they should inform in, above all there are different views on whether information in the national minority languages must be available or not, so there is uncertainty about current legal requirements.The purpose of the report is to illustrate the difference in how authorities work with the availability of information in other languages on their websites. The report can be helpful for starting work at a central level to develop a common policy for how and whether authorities should provide information in other languages on their websites.

Everything to make it easier for those who need the information and that all the work to produce the information in other languages really comes to use.

Vi lever i något som allmänt kallas för informationssamhället, det är tidens anda att alla ska kunna tillgodogöra sig information om nästan allt och alla. I den här rapporten har det undersökts hur tillgängligheten av information på olika språk är på webbsidor som hör till myndigheter som privatpersoner av olika skäl kan behöva ha vetskap om samt hur den informationen hittas.Det visade sig att antalet språk som myndigheter väljer att ha information på skiljer sig mellan myndigheter och att inget gemensamt synsätt finns. En del myndigheter har endast information på engelska på sina webbsidor utöver svenska och fler är på väg till att gå åt det hållet och alltså ta bort information på andra språk. Det resoneras att tekniska hjälpmedel som översätter text kommer att användas i allt större omfattning och att det då är en fördel om information finns på engelska då flertalet av sådana verktyg anses bättre på att hantera engelska. Andra myndigheter försöker hålla information på så många som möjligt av de språk som man tror sig vara mest använda i Sverige.

I studien framkommer dessutom att språkvalen på en del av webbsidorna är placerade på ett sätt som gör de svåra att hitta och det kan då resultera i att informationen inte nås av de som berörs och behöver informationen.Myndigheterna har olika tro kring vilka språk de ska ha information på framförallt är det olika syn på om information på de nationella minoritetsspråken måste finnas eller inte, det finns alltså en osäkerhet kring gällande lagkrav.Syftet med rapporten är att belysa skillnaden i hur myndigheter arbetar med tillgången av information på andra språk på sina webbsidor. Rapporten kan ligga till hjälp för att på central nivå starta ett arbete med att få fram en gemensam policy för hur och om myndigheter ska informera på andra språk på sin webbsida. Allt för att göra det enklare både för myndigheterna och framförallt för de som har behov av informationen och att allt det arbetet med att ta fram informationen på andra språk verkligen kommer till användning.
