Abstract [en]
The aim of the study was to examine the media portrayal of the 2023 Wimbledon men’s and ladies’ singles finals, with a focus on the language used to describe the players and the matches, the aspects highlighted, and the conveyed narratives.
This was done through an analysis of two articles from the official Wimbledon website, one featuring the men’s singles final and the other the ladies’ singles final. The men’s final, featured Djokovic and Alcaraz and was framed around the topics of historical significance, competitive spirit, and physical endurance. Descriptions emphasized the intense, action-filled nature of the match and the athletic prowess of the players. In contrast, the ladies’ final, which was contested by Vondrousova and Jabeur, highlighted emotional intensity, personal narratives, and historical milestones. Vondrousova’s unexpected victory as an unseeded player and Jabeur’s cultural and national significance were central to the coverage.
The findings suggest a gender bias in sports media, where men’s matches are often portrayed in terms of athleticism and competition, while women’s matches are contextualized within broader emotional and personal narratives. These differences highlight the need for a more balanced and fair gender representation in sports media.
