Background:

A stoma is a surgically created opening on the body for draining body fluids, common in cases of intestinal problems like cancer or diseases in the intestinal area. The self-care of the stoma is important to manage the new life. The nurse's role is to support the patient both physically and emotionally. Both illness and treatment can cause suffering for the patient, therefore it is important to support patients with stomas in order to maintain their health and well-being.

Aim:

The aim of this study was to investigate patients experiences of living with an intestinal stoma.

Method:

A literature-based review has been done of qualitative original articles and articles with mixed methods. The databases PubMed and Cinahl were used to search for relevant literature. The selection included nine articles from different countries and were assessed by quality and analyzed by a five-step process.

Results:

Two main themes and five under-themes were identified. Participants experienced difficulties in accepting their changed body and being comfortable showing it. Negative emotions such as anxiety, insecurity, and shame were common, leading to psychological consequences such as grief and depression. The stoma had a negative impact on sex life, with fear of rejection from partners. Social life was also limited by fear of leakage. Support from healthcare with information, education, and follow-up was found to be crucial in managing life with a stoma.

Conclusion:

For adult patients living with an ostomy, it poses challenges in daily life, relationships, and social life. Patients struggle to accept the physical changes in their body and the stigma attached to the ostomy bag affects their emotional health. The education of the ostomy played a crucial role in how patients coped with life after the surgery, which means that the nurse has an important role. Lack of information leads to anxiety and insecurity in managing the stomas.

Syftet med denna studie var att ta reda på vuxna patienters upplevelser av att leva med en tarmstomi. 43 000 personer lever idag med någon form av stomi som ofta förekommer i samband med ett trauma eller sjukdom. Studien visar att patienter som lever med tarmstomi upplever utmaningar i sin vardag. Det berör den förändrade identiteten, frånvaro av acceptans relaterat till den nya kroppsbilden och skam. Påverkan på livskvaliteten, där rädsla för läckage, den sexuella hälsan och det sociala livet är framträdande.

Undervisning och stöd från vården påverkar patienternas upplevelser och livskvalitet. De patienter som inte erhåller rätt stöd och information upplever livet efter stomioperationen som begränsat. Sjuksköterskor spelar en viktig roll i att stötta och guida patienterna till självständighet och trygghet i hanteringen av sin stomi. Kunskap om patienters upplevelser kan bidra till en bättre vårdkvalitet och ökad livskvalitet för denna patientgrupp. Ett personcentrerat och respektfullt bemötande från vårdpersonalen kan ge en bättre möjlighet för patienterna att anpassa sig till sin nya vardag och möjliggöra en ökad självständighet och frihet. Patienter med stomi kan stötas på vårdkedjans alla delar.

Det innebär att det är av vikt för sjuksköterskor att vara medvetna om och förstå patienternas upplevelser samt att kunna erbjuda den support och vård de behöver för att på bästa möjliga sätt bibehålla ett normalt liv med sin stomi. En analys av kvalitativ forskning användes för att detta ansågs bäst svara på syftet som eftersträvar patienters upplevelser. Forskningen analyserades och delades in i teman som utgjorde resultatet.
