Bakgrund:

Kriminellt eller antisocialt beteende bland barn och ungdomar främjas genom en kombination av olika faktorer, så som, fattigdom, psykisk ohälsa, trauma, våld, misslyckande i skolan, bruk av narkotika, inlärningssvårigheter, dysfunktionella hemmaförhållanden och vänner med kriminellt beteende. När dessa individer döms till ungdomsanstalt eller omhändertas på grund av deras destruktiva livsstil hamnar de på ungdomsinstitutioner. Institutionerna ska vara baserad på vård, behandling och kompetent personal för att minska återfall i brott enligt behandlingsprincipen.

Syfte:

Studiens syfte var att beskriva barn och ungdomars upplevelser av att vårdas på institution.

Metod:

En litteraturstudie utfördes genom en tematisk metod som baserades på åtta kvalitativa artiklar.

Resultat:

Studiens resultat delats in i två huvudteman och sex subteman. Huvudtemat, vikten av aktivitet, reflektion och delaktighet samt förekomst av våld och övergrepp beskrivs genom fyra subteman, dagliga aktiviteters betydelse, förutsättningar för reflektioner, delaktighet under tvångsvård och förekomst av våld och övergrepp. Det andra huvudtemat, en mångfacetterad personalkår med både styrkor och brister beskrivs med två subteman, vikten av tillitsfull och kompetent personal samt personal som favoriserar och diskriminerar. Ur dessa teman framkommer det hur barn och ungdomar upplever en institution som präglas av en våldskultur och personal som har en bristande kompetens. Andra viktiga aspekter som lyfts handlar om vikten av goda relationer både med personal och andra intagna, samt vikten av delaktighet under vistelsen på institution.

Slutsats:

Slutsatser som kan dras från studien är att det krävs en stabil och säker miljö med en kompetent personal som fokuserar på att bygga prosociala relationer med barn och ungdomar som är placerade. Detta möjliggör en god förändring för barn och ungdomar som är placerade och kan leda till att de fungerar väl i samhället efter att de lämnar institutionen.

Background:

Criminal or antisocial behavior among children and young people is promoted by a combination of factors, such as poverty, mental illness, trauma, violence, school failure, drug use, learning disabilities, dysfunctional home conditions and friends with criminal behavior. When these individuals are sentenced to juvenile facilities or taken into custody because of their destructive lifestyles, they end up in juvenile facilities. The institutions must be based on care, treatment and competent staff to reduce recidivism according to the treatment principle.

Purpose:

The purpose of the study was to describe children and young people's experiences of being cared for in an institution.

Method:

A literature study was done through a thematic method that was based on eight qualitative articles.

Result:

The study's results are divided into two main themes and six subthemes. The first main theme, the importance of activity, reflection and participation and the occurrence of violence and abuse, is described through four sub-themes, importance of daily activities, prerequisites for reflections, participation in compulsory care and occurrence of violence and abuse. The second main theme, a multifaceted workforce with both strengths and weaknesses, is described with two subthemes, the importance of trustworthy and competent staff as well as staff who favor and discriminate. From these themes it emerges how children and young people experience an institution characterized by a culture of violence and staff with a lack of competence. Other important aspects that are highlighted concern the importance of good relationships both with staff and other inmates, as well as the importance of participation during the stay at the institution.

Conclusion:

The study's conclusions are that a stable and safe environment is required with competent staff focusing on building prosocial relationships with children and young people placed at the institution. This enables a good change for children and young people who are placed and can lead to them functioning well in society after they leave the institution.
