Abstract [en]
This study investigates whether excise tax, income, level of education and price have an impact on snus consumption in Sweden. The study includes a time series of 32 observations covering the years 1991 to 2022 with annual data points. The time series was analyzed by testing for stationarity and cointegration. Then applying the Ordinary Least Square regression method and the results showed that, consumers of snus are negatively affected by higher excise tax while higher income leads to an increase in consumption. For the educational levels, the results indicated a differentiated effect on snus consumption within different educational levels.
The results indicated that price has an insignificant effect on snus consumption in Sweden as the price elasticity of demand was in elastic for Swedish consumers. The results are supported by previously conducted studies, principles of microeconomics, the law of demand and price elasticity of demand.
The conclusion of thestudy is that the excise tax, income, education levels and price of snus have an impact on snus consumption in Sweden with validation from previous studies made and the results obtained through the regression in this study.
