Background: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), is a mental illness characterized by repetitive and often unwanted thoughts and behaviors that the affected person cannot control. This thesis explores different aspects of obsessive-compulsive disorder, including its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. In addition, the role of relatives in the psychiatric nurse's person-centered care is described.

Aim: The aim of this thesis was to describe relatives' experiences of living together with people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Method: A systematic literature review of qualitative articles and studies has been conducted.

Results: Obsessive-compulsive disorder affected relatives in different ways, depending on whether it was a child, sibling, parent or partner who suffered from the disease. Lack of knowledge and stigmatizing behavior about obsessive-compulsive disorder were also highlighted. Among other things the disease could also bring positive effects for example an opportunity to grow together as a family.

Conclusion: Unfortunately, obsessive-compulsive disorder is often met with lack of knowledge, ignorance or stigma which emphasizes the need for continued research and education to make it easier for psychiatric nurses, but also for the sufferer and their relatives. Psychiatric nurses need to adopt a person centered approach and pay attention to the value of the affected persons’ relatives. This applies not only to their care but also in the facilitation of getting early healthcare.
