Abstract [en]

Socialisation among modern younger Swedes is continuously being conditioned through social media use. This thesis aimed to explore what potential interplay is there between social media use and social capital in the offline local context of Trollhättan and the online context of social media within two distinct age groups? This thesis was conducted using a small-N study comparatively analysing two focus groups, aged 40+ and 18-22, in the semi-urban area of Trollhättan, Sweden, which were interviewed using a semi-structured method. Putnam’s theory on social capital acts as the basis for the analytical framework utilised in the analysis of the interviews, integrating his concepts of bonding, and bridging social capital and civic participation. The findings suggest that young Swedes in Trollhättan may be disassociated with the local community and their perceptions of socialisation warping in reaction to social media, in comparison to their older counterparts. Future research may suggest that social media has the potential to negatively affect the offline community in the future, potentially leading to the deconstruction of traditionally interklinked communities.
