Abstract [en]
Transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) can markedly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. However, the price of EVs remains a factor affecting the adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles. This is often incentivized through government policies to boost EV uptake, hence, the unforeseen removal of the Bonus policy – subsidy for EVs in Sweden – inspired this study. It investigates the impact of the removal of financial incentives on the sales of BEVs in Sweden. Utilizing secondary data sourced from primary records, we conducted a multiple linear regression analysis to test the hypothesis that financial incentives significantly affect BEV sales. Initially, we had 2 independent variables, and 5 control variables with BEV sales as the dependent variable. During the analysis, multiple econometric tests were conducted to ensure the robustness of the data. This led to the discovery of a serial correlation in the dependent variable introducing a new independent variable; Lag of ln BEV sales. The results did not provide substantial grounds to reject the null hypothesis implying that the removal of the financial incentives did not have a significant effect on the BEV sales. The study’s insights are pivotal for policymakers to refine and enhance similar policies in the future to sustain and boost EV uptake, as well as support the nation’s efforts in promoting sustainable transportation.
