Risk Factors That Can Contribute to Biological Mothers Committing Filicide : A Literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Filicide is when a child aged 0–18 is killed by their own parent. In Sweden, biological mothers are identified as perpetrators in most cases involving young children, whereas internationally they are considered perpetrators in most cases across all age groups. Motives behind killing your child can differ and cultural differences occur if filicide is considered a problem. Traditional norms and expectations on mothers persist and can appear unattainable. Additionally, biological factors are important for attachment between mother and child.

Aim: To describe risk factors that can contribute to biological mothers committing filicide. Method: This work is a literature review containing qualitative and quantitative articles. Ten articles were analyzed to identify similarities and differences, which developed into themes and sub-themes.

Results: Risk factors were found on individual, group, and societal levels. The following themes and sub-themes were created: (1) Mental illness within the mother, with sub-themes: Previous experience of mental illness, Mental illness in relation to pregnancy. (2) Destructive relationships in the mothers' lives, with sub-themes: Negative experiences of the upbringing environment, to have been exposed to intimate partner violence. (3) The stressful social environment, with sub-themes: Low socioeconomic status and education, Deficient care and support to the mother.

Conclusion: Mental illness, lack of empathy, problematic relationships along with inadequate emotional and social support can be seen as contributing risk factors for biological mothers to commit filicide. Furthermore, the likelihood of committing filicide is seen to increase if multiple risk factors are present in a mother's life simultaneously.
