Background:

Stress is a factor that affects people in different ways, but when exposed to stress for a longer period, negative stress emerges. Nurses have a responsibility to take care of patients and conduct patient-safe care. Stress has been identified as an obstacle in providing patient-safecare and ill health in newly graduated nurses.

Aim:

The aim of this study was to identify factors that can lead to stress in newly graduated nurses.

Method:

A literature review was used in this study. The literature review was based on eleven articles, five quantitative, two qualitative and four with mixed methods.

Results:

Two main themes emerged from the analysis, gap between theory and practice and work environment. Newly graduated nurses possessed self-inflicted factors that had an impact on their ability to manage their new responsibility and take on their new role as nurses. Factors related to the workplace were found as heavy workload and work culture.

Conclusion: Newly graduated nurses face multiple challenges when they start working as nurses, some caused from themselves, and others caused from the workplace. When newly graduated nurses are exposed to these factors for longer periods of time, they can start developing stress that canhave a negative impact on their own health but, can also affect theira bility to care for the patients.The factors that lead to stress can also endanger the patient's safety because of the work environment and their basis of education.
