Threats and violence in the workplace : a quantitative study on the staff's experience of low-affective response as a working method, in youth care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

International research shows that threats and violence towards social services staff have increased. Development within social services in Sweden follows the same principles that medical institutions advocate, i.e, the usage of scientifically proven work methods. Social services however use low affective response, a yet to be scientifically proven work method founded by psychologist Bo Hejlskov Eleven.

Through this quantitative questionnaire survey, we study the staff's experiences. By studying staff at both private and government LVU Youth housing in Sweden we wish to get a better understanding of if they feel that it is possible to prevent/reduce threats and violence by using Bo Hejlskov Elevén low affective response towards these youths. We investigate whether staff feel they have had adequate education/introduction to this work method, and feel safe and confident in applying it within daily practice.

We study the employer's ability to implement this work method through two pedagogical theories about learning. Piaget - accommodation, which is applicable when exchanging an old work method for a new one, and Pierre Bourdieu's theory. Bordieu means that staff that view the work method as a valuable capital resource are more likely to use it.

We wanted to see if youth care staff experience that threats and violence in the workplace can be reduced or prevented by using Psychologist Bo Heilskov Elevéns method of low-affective response towards the youths being cared for.

This study was conducted using a digital survey in Sweden. The total response frequency was 74.
