The annexation of Crimea in 2014 has relentlessly leaned the Swedish security policy toward a return to the Cold War-era policy of total defence. While the Swedish government is acting as regional leaders, regional protectors and bridge-builders in the Nordic and European circuit, the threats posed by Russia towards Ukraine has further elevated Sweden’s defence strategy. This era has therefore widened the question of whether the total defence policy has influenced Sweden’s foreign policy roles. This thesis applied a single-case study where role theory is used as the theoretical basis for analysing how the current policy of total defence in Sweden has influenced their foreign policy roles in the European geopolitical arena after the 2014 Crimea annexation. Qualitative content analysis is used to research different governmental statements and activities taken from the official web page of the Swedish government and articles and literature that were relevant for this thesis. The analysis showed that the Swedish government has opted for a stronger alliance with the Nordic regions. From the observed period, Sweden has strengthened their security partnership in the Nordic-Baltic regions while cooperating closely on security measures with the EU. For that reason, this thesis aims to contribute to a discussion on Sweden’s foreign policy behaviour after the Crimea annexation while analysing how the total defence policy has affectedSweden’s foreign policy roles in terms of regional leader, regional collaborator, and bridge-builder.
