The importance of the living environment for the elderly with dementia : a literaturebased study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The number of persons with dementia are increasing worldwide as the average age rises. The concept of environment is important when designing a home for persons with dementia due to the impact of the mental and physical environment. Therefore, it is important for the nurse to have up-to-date research and knowledge about environmental health in order to increase well-being.

Aim: The aim of the literature study was to describe the importance of the environment in promoting good health for persons with dementia.

Method: The method that was used was to contribute to evidence-based nursing based on analysis of qualitative research. Ten scientific articles were analysed according to Friberg’s five step model.

Results: The result was divided into two themes; "Environment for well-being and good quality of life" and "Person-centered environment". The physical and psychosocial environment were shown to affect persons with dementia and their well-being. It also turned out that an open environment encouraged socialization and well- being.

Conclusion: It turned out that the environment has a great impact on persons with dementia in nursing homes and the authors wishes to see more open floor plans and access to nature in nursing homes further on.
