The aim of this paper is to find out how Deep Fake, a new face swapping technique for moving imagery, might impact the future film industry as well as the problems it may pose not only ethically and morally, but also sociopolitically. This was investigated by comparing data from Swedish news articles with the results of interviews with filmmakers experienced in the use of Deep Fake technology.

The result of the study shows that Deep Fake might pose a threat in the near future regarding misuse of the technology resulting in the spread of misinformation and fraud.This seems to occur due to a common lack of knowledge regarding evaluation of information as well as the lack of a reliable method for detecting these kinds of videos.However, the investigation also showed that research is already being conducted to procure methods to detect Deep Fake fabrications.

Concerning industrial development, the results show that the technique in some cases already performs better than its predecessors. Deep Fake can evidently produce better results in a shorter amount of time, for a fraction of the price compared to its counterparts. However, the results also show that this case only can be made for certain productions with the current state of the technique, although the technique is expected to keep developing at speed.

Målet med denna studie är att ta reda på hur deepfake, en ny teknik för att utföra ansiktsbyten i rörlig bild, kan komma att påverka den framtida filmindustrin och vilka etik-, moral- samt sociopolitiska dilemman som kan komma att uppstå. Detta undersöktes genom att jämföra artiklar ur svenska dagstidningar med resultatet från intervjuer utförda på filmskapare med erfarenhet i användandet av deepfake teknologi.

Resultaten visar att deepfake kan komma att utgöra ett hot genom missbruk av teknologin vilket kan leda till spridningen av felinformation och bedrägerier. Orsaken till detta verkar vara en kombination av en brist på källkritiskt tänkande och en avsaknad av en pålitlig metod för att upptäcka dessa typer av fabrikationer. Dock visar undersökningen på att forskning redan påbörjats för att framställa en metod för just detta ändamål.

Vad gäller den industriella utvecklingen visar resultaten att tekniken i vissa fall redan ger bättre resultat än sina föregångare. Deepfake klarar tydligen redan av att producera bättre resultat på kortare tid, för bara en bråkdel av priset jämfört med tidigare tekniker. Resultaten visar emellertid även att dessa resultat i dagens läge endast kan uppnås vid specifika produktionskrav då tekniken fortfarande är under utveckling, men att stora förhoppningar finns för en fortsatt snabb utveckling av tekniken.
