Virtual realities as teaching materials for students in welding and metallurgy (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the advantages agents and avatars can have in a virtual environment for students in welding and metallurgy. The focus will be on how one can in the best way, through qualitative interviews and previous research, design the appearance of agents and avatars and how these can function as teaching aids. The results of the study show that avatars and agents have great opportunities to affect and influence the learning process of the welding and metallurgy students and also reduce potential risks that otherwise would be dangerous in a real situation. Furthermore, the visual design of avatars and agents have been investigated and shows that the appearance needs to be designed in a way that is not offensive in any way, by designing a gender-neutral appearance. The study has also assisted in an ongoing project at University West, called WELD-VR, that develops a virtual environment for teaching students in welding and metallurgy. It has given the study valuable insights into what virtual environments and potential teaching agents can look like.
