Performance comparison between a Cisco router and a DIY router (English)
Abstract [sv]

Studien syftar till att jämföra en specifikt framtagen router med en router som byggts av överbliven hårdvara avseende prestandaförlust vid stora routingtabeller. Målet är att se när enheterna når sin maxkapacitet och om max skiljer sig mellan dem. Arbetet är en vidareutveckling på ett arbete som gjordes 2014 [1], där det fastslogs att en Cisco 2901 kan hantera 115 000 routes innan minnet är fullt. Vår studie implementerar ett routingprotokoll för att utröna ifall det får någon effekt på resultatet.

Resultatet är att de båda enheterna är likvärdiga när det gäller vidarebefordring av paket, med endast en genomsnittlig skillnad på knappt 30 µs per paket i den givna topologin. Cisco enheten bottnar ut på 198 496 routes och kan fortfarande skicka trafik vidare. På DIY-routern avbröts mätningarna vid 250 000 routes.

Abstract [en]

This study aims to compare a specifically developed router with one built from leftover hardware in terms of performance loss at large routing tables. The goal is to see when the units reach their maximum capacity and if the maximum differs between them. This study is a further development of a study done in 2014 [1], where it was established that a Cisco 2901 can handle 115,000 routes before the memory is full. Our study implements a routing protocol to find out if it has any effect on the result.

The result is that the two units are equivalent when it comes to forwarding packets, with only an average difference of just under 30 µs per packet in the given topology. The Cisco unit is maxed out on 198,496 routes and can still forward traffic. At 250 000 routes, the measurements on the DIY router were stopped
