Abstract [en]
Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurological disease generally known as a motor neurone disease that affects the upper and lower motor neurons leading to weakness, muscle waste and paralysis. There is no cure for ALS, which over time always leads to a fatal outcome. People close to a person with ALS becomes often the primarily care giver, which lead to different emotional states. Aim: The purpose of this study was to illuminate relatives´ experiences of living with a person who has ALS. Method: A literature-based study based on analysis of qualitative data. The study included eight qualitative articles analyzed with Friberg´s five-step model. Results: The result was presented in three main themes Emotional barriers, Support and Meaning of life. The disease is lifechanging for everyone involved, it often creates an environment with challenges beyond believe for the family. The best coping mechanism is to take each day as it comes, by doing this the relatives were able to find a meaningful life despite the disease. Conclusion: The result show that it is important to show support and what kind of different support that is available. Every relative is different and needs to be approached as an individual. The nurse can, through knowledge, meet these conditions and convey good support. This will lead to a feeling of wellbeing for the caregiver.
