Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: The concept univentricular heart is used as a collection name to describe a variety of complicated heart malformations, where the child needs surgical correction in order to survive. All since the modern three-step surgery was introduced in the early 1990´s the survival of children born with univentricular heart has increased significantly. This means that a whole new group of patients are growing up. It is therefore important to gain knowledge of how the families of these children experience their life situation in order to be able to support them the best way as possible. Aim: The aim of the study is to describe experiences of the life situation over time in families with children living with a univentricular heart. Methods: This study is based on a longitudinal follow-up, where the aim has been to capture families' life situation and quality of life. The study was conducted using surveys that were sent out on two occasions, the first in 1995 and the second in 2011. Results: The results show that the families are satisfied with their overall life situation. When the children were younger, the families expressed a greater need for support and coordination from the health care. As the child grows up, the families have since learned to adapt their lives to the situation they are in. Conclusion: Families living with a child born with a univentricular heart undergo different phases of life, each phase giving rise to new needs. The result that the study contributes to is important to include in the meeting with these families in order to best support the families through the upbringing of the children.
